I feel that the ares is possibly the worst tech 2 ship in game, 2 mids slot makes tackling hard, granted it has 4 lows and you can probably crank it up to some nice speeds. its hard to fit and as we have seen by the way they changing khanid ships mixed weapon types are bad. 2 missile slots and 2 guns slots, 2 bonuses that apply to either weapon type. It also only gallente ship(apart from indy's)that has no drone bay. The only good thing about the ares is its cheap.
Now I don't really know how you can improve this ship, making it turrets only would make it too similar to taranis.
I think it would be cool to turn it into a drone inty, maybe let it field 4-5 light drones and give a bonus to drone range and perhaps drone hit points or speed. Then remove 2 high points to help balance it and give it a third mid point, drop its grid a cu a bit to compensate for not needing to fit much weapons.

give it a 5m3 drone bay, remove a low add a mid and give it some pg so it can actually fit something, thin kthat's enough to make it a viable ship.

More powergrid wouldn't be bad. I would settle for more powergrid. It would have to be lots to get a decent setup on though.

I think you may have a point. The problem with balancing the Ares is that it will always pale in comparison with the Taranis, which to be honest is a freaking awesome ship. Still, if only for variety, I'd settle for a slightly beefier version (more PG) with split weapons systems.
At the moment I just use an Ares to transport valuable mods and BPOs because it is incredibly fast and aligns almost instantly. |

I'm happy with the Ares as it is and it's one of my main ships that I fly, but if we could get a change I'd like to see the the two (worthless) turret slots removed and replaced with at least one additional launcher slot and enough powergrid to be able to easily fit 3 standard launchers. ------------------

I was thinking of that myself but that makes too crow like and new maldecation like and gallente are not really a missle using race so the ares being a missle spammer while would be useful and make it good would not really fit well. Join The Fight With Promo Today |

Well, the description says the company that makes it (Roden Shipyards) are into fast missile-using ships. I mean sure Gallente are generally not missile users, but the Amarr are not big drone users either but then you have the Arbitrator and its Recon tech 2 variants.
It wouldn't really be like the Malediction or Crow because the Malediction is going to be geared towards rockets at close range and it's one of the heavy relatively slow interceptors (like the Stiletto, Taranis and Raptor). The Crow would be the closest thing, but the Crow, unlike the other three faster interceptors (Ares, Crusader and Claw), has the 3 mid and 3 low configuration of the heavier interceptors that makes it a better tackler. It also has the slowest base speed of the 4 faster interceptors.
So, there will still be quite a few differences.
Right now, you either fit it with rockets and blasters for close range (which is the job of the Taranis and it can do it a lot better) or you simply don't fit turrets. Because as things stand, without Advanced Weapon Upgrades skill (which I don't have yet), you can't even fit 2 75 mm rails if you have 2 standard launchers and a tech 2 mwd without using fitting mods. And those guns would be useless even if you could track at the speeds you'll be going because they can't reach beyond 12 km something with iron. And even with 2 125 mm rails on it, the guns wouldn't be all that useful. ------------------

I have about 24-25K sp in missiles. It hurts me, that there's a launcher on the Enyo, Megathron etc. I flew the Ares once or twice, and I feel underpowered because of the T1 rocket launchers being fitted. It's a nice fast frigate, but, to me, not very useful. Maybe, I'll Spec in Rockets and Light Missiles... till then, Ares won't be for me.

I use the Ares a lot as throwaway tackler, serious combat seems not reasonable with its current weapon layout ___

This reminds me, since it's a bit off topic... Why on earth is the Nemesis made by Duvolle and not Roden? I've ALWAYS pondered this. Think about it. The Nemesis is a bomber, thus uses missiles or bombs. Roden is the missile prefering shipyard... It even makes sense right away. The Nemesis did have 2 turrets and damage to them, so it made "slight" if little sense to have it blaster preferred but abit weird due to its role. Now with the changes to bombers, it makes it pretty much obsolete.
Then again I can't really complain, I mean, there are two things I've noticed they could have done(too late at this point as it could/would tick a lot of people off with a possibility of being good)
1. I doubt anyone would want to fly a big, fat, round, pink thing that would be instantly called kirby over the darker green ship it is presently.
2. Eris' split weapons suck, and I'm sure a lot of people agree on that, so the only thing I can think of to keep the manufacturer balance even is to switch eris(roden) with Nemesis(duvolle) to make the "eris" into some sort of blaster/drone dictor... which would possibly be better.
Onto the Ares... it's not "too" difficult to fit, just really tight and needing specific loadouts to do what you want. You can fit a sar and say goodbye to any real offensive ability. Speed fit and ditch offense/defense. Pure dps but slow and fragile(did it only once as a test and it was...meh) The ares ain't terrible, but it ain't great, it's just versatile and never great at much than one specific role setup.
