Heya, I'm fairly new to eve and I wasn't sure if I should put this in the newbie form or this one. I chose this one since my topic is very specific and even has its own board, so I figured I'd take advantage of it :).
I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my character, but recently I've been warming to the idea of being a pirate hunter in addition to ratting since I started spending more time in low sec space ;). I did look around for guides and I couldn't find any on this particular topic, so if I missed something by all means point me in the right direction!
I recently got my hands on a Stabber and have it fitted as follows:
High: 4 425mm guns with Proton M ammo, 2 Standard Launchers with Sabretooth missiles
Mid: Afterburner 10mn, stasis webifier, warp disruptor
Low: Overload Capacitor (is that right, the one that increases speed at the cost of cargo space?), damage control 1, and armor repair 1
And a hornet drone in the hold for good measure.
This is just to start me out, I'm currently training so that I can use better damage control and armor repair units. I kept the 2 standard launchers on there so that I had something that would reliably hit frigates hard since I noticed that my new medium autocannons had a hard time hitting the smaller frigates. Would I be better off throwing on some heavy launchers and maybe putting on a small cannon or two? I'm also open to any suggestions on how to better outfit my ship geared towards small/mid-level pirate hunting. I read most of the pirate guides and they were very helpful, but there didn't seem to be a lot of info in them specifically about hunting the hunters. Thanks for any feedback!

Looks good, I'd go with smaller guns and a microwarp drive, stabber is a speed ship after all :P

Yeah, I've been leaning torwards getting heavy missiles and throwing a small autocannon or two on there instead to pop frigates. I actually tried a microwarpdrive instead of an afterburner, but I won't be using one anytime soon. Maybe it'll be better once my skill gets higher, but that sucker drained my capacitor waaay too fast for my liking. The afterburner gives me a much smaller boost, but at the same time I can keep it on indefinitely and it doesn't increase my sig res by 500% in case I run into a bigger guy :). Of course, I might be biased against it since my afterburner skill is at V and my High speed maneuvering is at 1 D:.
On a side note, is the MWD more sustainable with a higher skill? I'm guessing I won't be able to leave it on all the time like the afterburner even with a V skill, but will it last me through an engagement?

Edited by: General Coochie on 04/08/2007 00:47:30 Not all pirates have -5 sec status or lower. If you dont wanna let them have the first shot in a fight be prepared to loose security status yourself.
Ive been trying to hunt pirates specifically myself at times even though Im a pirate. because pirates tend to have the best loot in lowsec that you can come across in belts.
What I do is that I park myself in a system where there are some noob afk (make sure it aint a macro hauler with some wierd name) or since I got my alt I use him. I name my ship to "Noob's Brutix" or "Alt's XXXX". I put 2 small drones out and pop the NPCs. Now if a solo pirate enters system thats hunting he scans you down and probabyl thinks its the alt sitting there ratting, with bad drones skills etc. He jumps in and expects an easy kill but finds you there a several months older charachter ready to bring him a good fight.
Last couple of nights I did this though, the systems I were in had like 2 ppl jump through every 20min or so very seldom pirates. Dont know what happend, but if I would have been a noob ratting I could have done so for hours probably in peace mostly. And ppl say there are pirates everywhere
Make sure you have a setup that counters most pirates though, pirates like to fly stabbers, vagas, thoraxes in my experience. Recons aswell off course wathc out for them
So far this tactic has brought me a few kills, but Im very disapointed at the low pirate rate in space those nights
edit: And bounty hunter is probably the hardest, most unrewarding thing you can do in eve. Getting bounty requiers a pod kill wich is very hard to get against someone that doesnt wanna get podded Signature removed - please reduce your signature graphic height to less than 120 pixels - Jacques([email protected]) |

Edited by: Surfin''s PlunderBunny on 04/08/2007 01:49:41 You might get lucky with the pod and the guy might drop the mouse off the desk that time I got podded in 0.0 and lost my 76M isk bounty
And don't throw a fit when you get killed because it will happen a lot... so don't by like this guy. But it is funny when it happens

Thanks for the good advice guys :). I actually went with a completely new set up that I'm really enjoying so far. I dropped all my medium turrets for 280mm artillery smalls and loaded on two heavy missile launchers. I've yet to test it on an actual player, but good god does it absolutely ravage NPCs. I park myself at about 9km so that I don't play leapfrog if they go out of my stasis webifier range and just open up, most of the time they can't even hit me. If I run into something large I orbit them and watch all of the misses :D. This set up seems like a great match to the stabber's inherent speed, letting me stay out of range of frigates yet still doing mucho damage to larger ships. It's all theorycraft at this point though, I'm waiting for my mechanic skill in order to get a larger armor repair unit before I start hunting real players.

Not if you are more then 10km away from your enemy
I also would like to stay start small. You should be able to afford 10 stabber losses easely, cause you will loose them. If you cant afford that start in a rifter to get the feeling for PvP, then after having expereince atleast 10fights and gotten good with the scanner upgrade to cruisers. 4x Dual 180mm II 2x Heavy Launcher II
1x 10mn MWD II 1x Disruptor II 1x LSE II
2x Nano II 1x Gyro II
3x Auxiliary Thruster I
Relatively cheap fit, or if you arent short on isk, replace 2x Nano II with Overdrive Injector II and replace the rigs with Polycarbon Engine Housings.

stabbers a great ship to hunt pirates in, head to schmaeel, or one of the more lightly pirated systems, tons of pirate targets |
