Just when I thought things work a bit better the last days the forums ate another long post of mine, and stupid me I didn't copy it into notepad.
So ... dear Community Relations folks: Any ETA on providing forums that actually work (as we were told in a dev blog half a year ago would be worked on)?
Thanks. --

The entire web experience gets much improved with Firefox. Try it and you'll see. Sometimes when im at some friends house, I get forced to use his Internet Exploder and seriously, I dont understand why anyone would pick it when Firefox exists. Its just soooo annoying to use.

At home I use Opera which works better but at work I am at times limited to a Citrix'fied Softriciti'ed proxied iexplore.exe.
Yes, I know, this horrible (that and my use of apostrophes).
p.s. this is a very bad day it seems, forum wise. Another internal server error 500 when editing just happened. --

There is currently no ETA as such, but we're hoping this year. Which might mean next year obviously, but I write emails about it from time to time to make it happen.

Edit: corrected spelling braindeadness on my part
If thats the case then I don't understand why CCP doesn't turn those timings up a notch. Easy fix.
Frankly, web apps with too short session timings are a major PITA (I know, I have to use plenty for work). Assuming that memory consumption for holding server-side session info really can't be the problem the only reason to do this is security (session hijacking) and c'mon folks this is a forum about internet spaceships, give it a session time of two hours or something
Its the exact same thing btw for the Eve character generation. Take more than about 10 minutes for creating your character portrait and it kicks you out and you can start over - equally pointless session limitation --

Btw, @ DS: This isn't only a session time problem. Disregarding the gazillion "internal server errors" I got today (which does not normally happen that often) I also usually have to click "reply" like three times, the first two times taking me back to the thread page and the third, sometimes fourth time opening the form to post. Also, half of the time I get "This thread does not exist" after editing --

...
Like you allready answered about session hijacking is one of the many problems that increaseing session times could cause. Another problem would be where are the forums used, if it is in an public place you rather not want anyone be able to rescrub the cookie and be able to mess on your account (even if just posting).
Also to keep an healthy secure session state alive means server side tracking because anything done client side can not contain any sensitive information. If there is an problem serverside (ASP service hickup or IIS lockup / reboot) then the cookie / sessioncookie on the server gets invalidated mostly because of this which means your session is invalid.
I myself spend a good part of a month trying to write an solid and secure (well as much as is possible anyway) session & cookie state management application which works by storeing important settings server side, handles short TTL data in sessions (logged in state generally) and handles all other data trough cookies (page requests, data submits, redirects etc). To make an proper interface between pages with seemingless communication, tracking, encrypted information handling and data handling it takes alot of validation & checks to make it work and keep it working. Encryption is the most important part because otherwise people will go do abit of reverse engineering and might create serieus problems. The point in the end would be to allow someone to keep an "logged in" state but to prevent "cookie sniffing" and someone else to take over the other persons account.
It is certainly not an easy task and it takes alot of clean style code writeing and documenting to make it work properly and to keep it functioning properly in the future if other people make add-ons in the code. I write alot of ASP code and know the very problems that ccp is faceing by useing this same product, in the end it is absolutely worth it because it is still a good, robust language and the tools are only as good as the person useing (or in this case writeing) it is.
/edit Although i can understand problems crawling up when a pages code becomes to complicated (long) with to many if/then/else statements. For example "ingameboard.asp" handles alot of the forum board-code like viewing the different boards, viewing the topics, reading the posts, replying to posts etc. At some point it becomes known as "spaghetti (SP) codeing" which is an bad habit, and you can run against the max ammount of ASP that IIS can possible interpret at an single time (we ran into that problem once). Additionally i hope ccp makes use of alot of procedures / functions instead of redundant codeing (no offense there redundancy ).

In the spirit of bashing IE, I shall relate my work day today.
I'm in charge of a website at the company I work for. I coded a CSS and XHTML 1.0 transitional compliant website that displays properly in:
- Firefox 2.0
- IE7 (surprisingly enough)
- Opera 9
- Navigator 9
- Safari 3.0
I get a call today from my boss, telling me that the CEO of our partner firm in Germany says the webpage is borked.
He is using IE6.
I'd like to fly to Germany and slap the CEO in the face while exclaiming "You're a ******* software development company! Why the **** are you using Internet Explorer 6?"
In short. IE is from hell. Get a standards compliant browser. ---------------

Lets answer several things at once.
On using Opera/FF:
I am the first to drop IE on any machine I control (as I said) but sometimes (i.e. at work) people don't have a choice. I would LOVE if IE (and MS as a whole) would pass the ACID test and follow all relevant RFCs just like other browsers but I don't see that happening any time soon.
On session timers:
I see your point. But my philosophy on good web design is as follows: Make session timers long enough to NOT annoy people. Then ENCOURAGE people to use a logout button. If they don't, the next time they login present a reminder page reminding them to use the logout button. This is how some major freemailers handle it and its recommended on some web design guru page, maybe Nielsen's useit.com, can't remember.
On everything:
Its just not session timers. Scroll up for more issues with the forums, there is a LOT more wrong with them (recap: "thread does not exist" after posting, repeatedly hitting "reply" required) etc.
On Thor's posts failing only when they're constructive:
That explains

Err, pardon me but if you are in charge of a website and the website is NOT compatible with MSIE6, then you are doing terrible job. Every web developer should be able to make website compatilbe with all major browsers, becouse believe it or not, standards doesn't matter - market share does. And MSIE6 is still 50%+ of all web users.

While i agree that IE is still something one's website need to be compatible with, claiming that standards don't matter hurts your credibility alot. Are you one of those guys that makes website completely out of tables? Also, marketshare is more complex than just "50% of the internet uses blank, 30% uses blank, extcetera" - the audience you're targeting has a big impact too. If the site is part of an internal network used by a software development company, expecting them to use IE 7 or Firefox isn't unreasonable. ------------ Whiners - Unite!
