To begin -- newbs -- don't do it. DO NOT PODKILL UNLESS YOU REALLY MEAN IT!
I've written in here before -- DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE I DID AND PODKILL SOMEONE ****ING AROUND IN THIS GAME. DO NOT!! I wanted to continue playing after my trial; my friend here in town did not. We went to 0.4 space, and I tried to play around getting him podkilled. It cost me my ship (there was a sentry gun watching our silliness) and 12% of my security rating.
Since then, I've been flying around at -1.1 with a nice orange glow to my toon. And, I just tried to do an interview for a corp application (the corp didn't have their minimum security rating noted in their applicant information), and I was told that I have to get my sec rating up. I'm missing out on a fun PvP war dec because of it.
Questions about sec status updates:
- Can I get sec status increases from running deadspace complexes? I ratted a little last night in 0.5 before trying to run a deadspace complex. I waited the 15 minutes to see if my sec status updated with the highest rat sec status bump in the deadspace complex, and I never saw it. I'm assuming NO, no sec status increase from deadspaces -- please confirm, though.
- Will training up Social to IV and then training Fast Talk help? I've seen that I can get 5% sec status standing with CONCORD with that skill, but I'm not into training Charisma-based skills unless I need to. I have Social II and Negotiation II right now, I think, to help with agent mission payouts.
Once again, kids -- DO NOT PODKILL UNLESS YOU REALLY MEAN IT. I was stupid, and it has cost me another few weeks waiting to get into a corp that I wanted to join. Grrr...
Thanks for any input you can provide.

Regaining your Sec status is easy enough to do. Just go out and kill most any type of rats you find. The tougher the rat is, the more gain you get. If you're tough enough and connected with the locals, 0.0 ratting makes for the fastest Sec gains. (And I mean it by being connected. 0.0 folk get just a little gunhappy with intruders) Just rat whatever you can and don't break the law and your status will come right back up. _______________________________

Complexes are a good source of rats, yes. Lather, rinse, repeat. _______________________________

Deadspace complexes are the EVE equivalent of dungeons. Fly in, shoot some bad guys, get to the end, maybe find some nice loot.
The old version were static complexes, that is they were found in specific systems and had beacons that were visible from anywhere in that system.
These are being phased out/have been phased out with exploration complexes though, where you have to scan to find them, plus they are no longer in any specific system.
