On trying to connect I get server status unknown message. I understand I have to do "something" to make it work. Could an enlightened soul offer suggestions/advice on what I presume is a firewall. I am technically challenged having been raised using an abacus so excuse my ignorance :)

Sorry for throwing a bunch of tech babble at you but here is a quick summary:
One way to circumvent a firewall which blocks ports would be to use a tunnel (such as an ssh tunnel with putty) and a program called soxcap.
However, you need access to an SSH server (a linux machine at home for instance), you might see bad latency (=lag), I have not tried Eve with Soxcap (depends if they use the Winsock interface or their own code).
If you google for "soxcap and ssh tunnel" you probably find all sorts of instructions.
But besides being far from trivial, please keep in mind that by doing such thing you are probably violating IT policies in your workplace, and most workplaces prohibit users from installing software in the first place.
edit: and most workplaces block ssh outgoing and anything but port 80 and 443 (for www) anyway so that makes it more complicated. --

I play Eve at work - but then I'm an admin.
Be nice to your Sysadmins and ask them to open a couple of choice ports for you

I am posting with my alt because...
I use PCAnywhere to connect to my home system, then go out from there. It's really laggy but you can do things like change skills, start manufacturing processes, etc. If you have a mining alt, you can go to a 1.0 or .9 system and mine to your hearts content. I wouldn't recommend jetcan mining because of ore theft but... you get the picture. ANY combat is completely out of the question. I also have a commercial fiber account into my house.
By the way, I am a senior system's admin and I know the network admin pretty good so he keeps a special port open for me, and I have my PCA client configured as such.

Find out who the Security Team are that manage your Firewall. Take the entire team down to the pub. Put your card behind the bar for the night. Tell them about your Eve woes. You will find that Eve works like a dream the following day.

Edited by: Gahjek on 07/08/2007 15:04:27 i play at work, but IÆm sysadmin.
You need port 2600 open on the firewall, i have opened this port for a specific Vlan and put my network port in that vlan
i wouldn't recommend doing what the other threads suggest, as you might find you have more time than you realise to play eve during the day!!
Most work PCÆs are ôlocked downö so installing s/w might be difficult
sorry port 26000

Thanks everyone for your help!
As for the nature of my work....I am umm a very reliable <cough> member of a large corporation. I would like to think that my work output in relation to my peers allows me time to "perhaps" play EVE......yes, thats it <nods head>.
p.s. The pub idea did cross my mind amongst others
