see, pirates don't fight solo they either camp a gate in groups of 10+ or jump on you when you undock a station in low sec with 5-6 ships then you come back here and complain, and they tell you to adapt or die oh, and people will ask to have your stuff

I could be wrong but I'm guessing he's talking about hunting RATS not PC pirates.
Most of the time it's best to shoot for one profession to start out and then use it to fund training and buying a ship for the other..
Personally I started by training for a mining barge and now I'm using that to make enough $$ to buy the skills and equipment for a cruiser and salvaging skills.
A good way to get started is to look at what profession you chose for your character, start there and then use the proceeds to move into another skill set.
PVP is pretty much best left to characters with over 2-3Mil skill points in just useful combat skills. even then you'll need to team up with a PVP corp to get enough support to stand a chance.

You can pvp as soon as you start the game... Just not without a LARGE group (ie BLOB). In the beginning you don't have the skills to properly fly ships to give you a fighting chance against a Pirate(s), whose only job is PVPing so they generally know what they are doing...
I started pvping and got my first kill (a myrmy vs our drake myrmy) at right around 1 mil SP (this was spread all over and definately NOT all in combat skills) so it can be done but you WILL lose alot of ships learning this way.
What some of the above posters say is very true though... sadly.
PVP, at least in lowsec, hunting Pirates (these are the flashy red guys with -5.0 or lower sec status, not to be confused with Rats which are NPC's) has turned into Gank vs Gank. He who has the bigger gank wins as an above poster said.
0.0 is not alot better then lowsec, since MWD and Gatecamps are normal as well as roving packs of Corps wandering... the upside being that 0.0's so large that running into these depending on where you are is not really likely.
This is not to say that you can't find some fairly even fights or even raise the odds in your favor (Gate Guns FTW) but currently it's better to fly in a Corp or Large Group of friends to PVP (for the back-up when the SH!T hits the fan... and believe me it WILL).
Yes, before anyone says anything... no I'm not an alt this is my main and yes I am not in a corp (Noob Corp WOOT). I have a very large group of friends, run my own TS server for comms, and have plenty of iskies, so I don't need a corp for #'s and generally fly in a small 2-3 man group anyway. Plus the advantages of Not being in a corp outweigh the advantages for me personally.
Hope this helped

fighting pirates is alot about timing...im assuming low sec here, of course.
basically, on the gate or station, you want to attack them when they are attacking someone else...it gets you an automatic 2v1 plus the gate guns are on your side. Same applies in the belts....but no sentrys obviously.
ive been flying through nalvula/jan solo, and come across 5-10 man camps before, and just by hanging around...they kill something, warp off to wait out aggro timer...and i snag a slow warper as the rest leave...and kill him before they can come back to help.
Its going to be very hard as a newbie tho...and some of the mechanics and rules will be bewildering to you, the various ways aggro works and doesnt, etc.
good luck!
