I've recently switched from WoW to Eve (I LOVE Eve!). I'm confused a bit by the items though and how it goes for rarity and so on. I've heard people talk about 'named' items and trash but how do you tell the difference? In WoW it was easy, if it was grey you merc it, white you could merc it or try to auction it, green you'd either keep or auction and purple/orange you keep or mule. Is there a comparable ranking system in Eve for items that makes it easier?
Thanks in advance...

The market is your friend. If it looks like it is worth a lot, sell it. If you need it, use it. If some other case, like really cheap crud from level 1 missions, just refine it for the ores. Altcenaries Motto: Don't make me come after you!

if you right click on an item and show info , you ll have a tabpage called variations . you ll see a basic item , and several different names .
the basic I item is considered trash for most folks (grey item in wow , refine) , the named modules can be worth a bit or a lot , and normally have a bit better stats on em . so possibility to sell em or refine (depends what quality , they refine the same as basic item )
you can check the stats by taking info for all those items and attributes and fitting tabpages .
named modules are considered white and a bit higher , the best named item will be about same as tech 2 but with lower requirments to fit so white till close to oj
tech 2 item is oj and red
officer is epic and legendary
groups of modules will roughly use the same names in the gradations . fe lets see cargo expanders : you ll see names like basic cargo expander I , expanded , alpha , beta , local , ...

A lot of the time loot will be your "regular" tech 1 loot but of course is still worth collecting sometimes to just stock up and melt it down as above said. However you can get some nice loot like a rare "named" item which you can tell by it having a name that is usually a different title then the regular tech 1 or 2 version. Example is a regular tech 1 is Standard Missile Launcher I but a named would be something like 'Arbalest' Standard Missile Launcher. Study the market and you will learn very quickly. |

Don't underestimate unnamed loot, especially not as a rookie.
Small Hull Repairer I might not be much for the world, but it still sells for 30 000 - 40 000 ISK, and you can get a bucketload of them at times.
I generally sell everything that's worth more than 10 000. Many small streams to form a big river and so on and so on. This is especially important early in the game, later on when you have blueprints to make your own ammunition and such you can start melting down more of the trash and use it to manufacture.
