As an Egyptian I have always enjoyed kebab. But what is this "doner" kebab people are talking about? How is it different from just kebab?
In Egypt its simply lamb meat thats cut into cubes, put on a spit with some veggies and roasted over a bbq. I don't see how someone could possibly conceal a chicken's foot in there. Even so, I have had some indegestion from some restaurants that don't cook it through and through, but those were few and far in between. Never heard of anyone getting salmonella from cooked lamb, so what gives? -------------------

Was in Greece back in 2006, they didn't have anywhere that actually sold a doner kebab, as I'd expect to see one, but did sell Gyros the actual doner meat on a plate etc.. In one restaurant I convinced the waiter to make me a doner using the pita bread etc.. At the time he seemed a little confused and asked if I wanted everything on it.. and of course I respond yes! :p
When it was delivered.. the chips were inside the pita bread too.. Got a good laugh from our table over that.

Thanks! I understand what you are all talking about now. In Egypt we call this Shawerma. I tend to be picky where I get mine from, but I never got sick from it. -------------------

ahh, now see, the second link has a picture of how a doner kebab should look while it's being cooked, with real bits of meat on it (although with lamb rather than chicken)

If you want to see some grade A RL flamefests, toddle over to the Wikipedia discussion pages and watch the Greeks, Turks and Arabs argue over weather a Doner, Gyro and Shawerma are the same thing... --------

It's all about finding a good shop. Most where i live are terrible (unless drunk) but the lebanese taverna near my work does awesome kebabs that you can enjoy while sober.

Kebab!
