Being new to this whole forum thingy, a question has arisen: what is a carebear and why does that seem to be a bad thing? There is no shame in ignorance. But refusing enlightenment when it is freely offered? Well, that is just stupid |

I believe it was a term coined referring to individuals and corps interested in the manufacturing and mining portions of the game. Usually used by those seeking more of a PvP experience who, generally speaking, look down upon those aspects of the game.
I think that is a fairly accurate summation of the term. I'm sure others can explain it a lot better (of course there will probably be some flamers too).

There are lots of old topics about this, but basicly, a carebear is some ***** that thinks his personal profit is much more important that general game balance and the happiness of the overall playerbase. Thus he wishes to ignore the riskVSreward system and get 39875 billion isk for 1 unit of veldspar.
Its not totally related to pvp, but the traders that get killed for trying to run plut or robotics in 0.0 and go whining on the forums about it are very good example of carebears, and since they try to hide behind the cover of "YOU ONLY WANT PVP THERE IS NON-PVP THINGS IN THIS GAME YOU KNOW" pvpers are usually caught using this term more than anyone else.
It doesnt really resemble a duck, looks more like a huge pink abomination with sharp claws/teeth. -

Thank you for the replies. From the context, I thought it was a referral to any sane person who thought that pirates were mental midgets who severly arrested developement.
And, no that isn't it Viceroy.

Carebears are people who cannot operate with the rules we have now so they want everything bent to make them "successful".
It can be applied to anyone wo wants CCP to change the rules so they do not have to think or strategize for themselves.
Hence the term carebear... They want CCP to take care of them.

from the previous games I've played it's a term for non-PvPers...
From those games it's the kind of person who would rather socialize, quest, and roleplay and other things rather than kill creatures or other players.
each to their own I guess

As should already be evident. .. the term's used in various different ways, almost all of them intended to be derogatory. Frankly, it's almost useless as a descriptive term any more; it's just a generic term of insult to throw at people, in the same way that anyone, anywhere, who kills you for any reason, is automatically "a pirate." Pirate's no longer a useful term either.
