Communism was unrealizable as is democracy. There always wont me full freedom in any country.
The theory of communism is pretty good and there is no terrible things in it. The problem isnt in it. If we go to the heart of the matter it would take too long to describe all the things about communism and all around.

I was really trying to find out if the communist era was seen as a dark time, and you're now "free" or if it was just seen as different, as you've said, but not necessarily absolutely right or absolutely wrong. I'm sure you're well aware, but in the UK, and more so in the US, Communism has been painted as evil, corrupt oppression etc.
I will visit Moscow at some point. I'm afraid Istanbul, Egypt/Middle East are first on the agenda. Nearest I've been is Ukraine, was in Kiev last year. Beautiful place, beautiful women. As far as I understand Ukraine is a split country, and Kiev and that part feel western, and the rest of Ukraine still feel Russian.
That's just stuff I've picked up - it could be wrong of course.

Problem with communism is that it doesn't promote originality and crushes the powerful aspirations of greed. So it actually is heavily flawed in concept, the founders didn't take the human factor into account.
