please don't suddenly limit the life of all secure containers regardless of the circumstances. those things cost a bundle in the Giant size, and it would really, really suck to have a big investment set up in a belt, only to have them all vanish one week because it's been a month since they were anchored...
i suggest that you base it on how long it's been since the player has interacted with them, and plz make it a long time, such as a month. that will eliminate the spam cans for corps that no longer exist or players that are no longer with the game.
i suggest the following rp reasons for limited secure can life and a method of reseting the *poof* timer on these costly containers:
secure cans are virtually indestructable, and have extroidinary station-keeping abilities (they can't be moved). it follows that they must have very thick and powerful shielding, and also have rudimentary propulsion. this also requires that all secure containers have a power source. although very efficient and long-lasting, this power source wouldn't be self generating, as is on starships. it would act like a battery, storing energy channeled from the launcher's vessel. the battery has enough capacity to operate the shields and anti-relocation drives running for one month. after that, they are depleted, and the container becomes succeptable to the rigors of space.
each time the launcher interacts with the container, such as coming close enough to open it, the battery is recharged, giving it another full month of life.
the owners of secure containers would be responible for keeping up with their cans and how long it's been since they've been launched and anchored, or recharged.
please consider this idea. it would be a major inconvienience to have to re-anchor twenty cans in a belt once every week or however long you guys were thinking of setting the *poof* timer for.
thanks for reading!

Are you posting this because CCP have suggested they're going to bring in some such time limit?
I've seen it requested often enough, but never seen anything that says they're going to introduce it .. but then, I don't look very hard

Yeah they mentioned that they were gonna lower the life span of the containers. THey already have a life span but they said it was "very very high" I think it was like.. a one sentence answer to a question in a CSM.
Heh.. the interact with idea would work, as I highly doubt the spammers actually interact with their ads.

if you don't wake up, i'll have to stop kissing you. all that flailing has made you sleepy. you rest while i untie you. stay here until they find you. My hand made mannequin. i won't let them get you. they'll know you're mine by the fingerprints on your throat. isn't she lovely? isn't she wonderful? like the *****s that we are, swatting flies from the wounds we design. |

Yeah I found that ... in which case, I agree with Etoile. If they're going to introduce - say for the sake of argument - a two week container life, then the two-week timer should start ticking from the patch that introduces it; we should not suddenly lose fifty-three containers because they've all been anchored in position for three months.

The containers shouldn't 'go away' after a certain amount of time. If you have not interacted with a container in say, two weeks, then it loses power and no longer keeps your password. There would be a whole new class of folks out there just picking up expired cans and reselling them!

OMG are you kidding me?
Please, if the problem is can spamming, just shorten the character limit. Who needs more than 10-15 charcters for an ID anyway, considering the corp tag is assigned to it. |

Good idea.
With this, Secure cans need to show up in assets. ------- Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes Guardian Enforcer, wrecking for 827.3 damage. |

You're thinking like an honest person. If you shortened the character limit, can spam would get WORSE; people would simply use 15 cans to post the message that they currently get on to just one.
"Recruiting!" - USFN "Join us!" - USFN "Buying ore" - USFN "Friendly" - USFN "Mining" - USFN "Research" - USFN "Production" - USFN "Exploring" - USFN "Contact us" - USFN "Unity Fusion" - USFN "Chat channel" - USFN
....you really do not want to see this, do you? And, btw, I used my corp's tag because I'm not going to accidentally accuse anyone of can-spamming.
