I assume everyone on these forums has heard of this upcoming MMO... just curiouse what everyone thinks of it so far???
Personally I think it has potential to be great (like any game I suppose) but I have my reservation of wether it will deliver.

Like you said, all games have potential. If this game is extremely good, then it will offer EvE competition, if it fails then it will offer EvE more players, as some will be wanting a better MMO game, so bring it on I'd imagine is what CCP is thinking
But from what I have seen I cant comment on the game itself, just that the engine looks nice and in shape.

It looks good. TOO good if you ask me.
I maintain it'll be vaporware. If we see half of the promised features reach a final release, I'll eat my hat.

Wow, nice. The MMOG business is rough though. They'll either release it too early to start making a profit for the bank manager, or they'll give it the good old MMOG Abortion due to lack of funding. Sadly, very few programmers are good business men. I really hope they succeed with this game though; I will definitely be playing it when it comes out.

It seems like it's almost entirely twitch-based gameplay, which is one of the things I don't much like in MMOs. I think I'd play it on occasion if it was free, but not if it costs money. ------------ Whiners - Unite! Tarminic - 25 Million SP in Forum Warfare. |

Looks to me like dev team doesnt either know what they are creating or do not have the manpower to do it (for example, theres contribution forum where random people can post ship models, and so on...).
If someone starts with this kind of project (its scale), they damn well better have complete design documents so they know exactly what they are doing in every step through dev process.
I hope it will succeed (need more space mmo's), but i'm pretty much sure that it is either vaporware or fails miserably. --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

Yeah too golden and 'perfect' to be true. Flying and landing on planets, seamless, insanely large, walking on planets, physics, astrophysics....sorry but it may run good on their little test comp/network but I severly bet that on the net it'll run like a buggy piece of crap.
I would like this game to be made and be my second mmo but frankly I strongley doubt it....well unless some big company takes intrest. --------

the enigine is looking good. the actual gameplay however...i dunno i didnt see any ui or something comparable. i guess it will be similar to freelancer where u see ur ship from 3rd person view. however the ship models are absolutely awful!
if they can make it as openended and huge and provide an tactical gameplay and complexitiy like eve ofc without LAG then this will be worth a try, but i somehow doubt it. i guess it will be similar to wow with several servers and twitchbased like freelancer or x-wing alliance which is ofc fun but has the danger of degenerating into a counterstrike like mass phenomenon.

Some of those ship models are hideous.
Eve needs the competition, but the kind of claims they're making for infinity? Yeah, right. I'd eat a hat too.

Seems like a weekly topic.
The engine is nice, however without funding and a sizeable increase in the workforce i cant see this moving anywhere.
I think they know this. It would be my guess that they'd like to have CCP buy the planetary system from them!
Good luck with the project guys. Very impressive!

I'm not so sure about that...
A lot of the players I see on the Infinity forums are EX-EVE players who now despise CCP in some way. This kind of rubs off on all the other Infinity forum members, giving EVE a bad taste in ppl's mouths...
EVE still doesn't fit the bill for many Sci-Fi game enthusiasts apparently...
I'm having fun following the progress & designing ships. Where it goes, who knows...
It's still fun though. More fun that logging into EVE these days tbh...

Personally I think it'll ultimately become a glorified tech demo. The developer(s) seem to know how to make a very nice working engine but haven't put much thought into the small but important gameplay aspects and details.

There is really only one developer.
It's pretty hard to get any sizeable concurrency going with one person.
It's apparent the DEV is concentrating on the engine first, as he plans to license that, and make his initial cash there.
No real point in him spending his own resources on gameplay yet until he has a finished engine, ready to be sold, etc...
So it may be atypical for game development, but I don't think it means 100% Infinity as a MMO will fail...
His game engine looks to be top notch, and certainly better than EVE's... Even if Infinity doesn't become an MMO, his engine might spawn others somewhere down the line... Game companies who have the knowledge & resources may build an MMO utilizing manpower for concurrent development paths might take advantage of his engine licensing option.
Either way, it's still a project worth my attention, that's for sure...

As you say, he does plan on licensing the engine. As you can see here he is focusing on the engine at the moment, gameplay hasn't really started yet. He does mention in the forums that there could possibly be a single player/offline version of the game.
He is certainly a very intelligent and talented individual. If he does pull it off he can use Infinity as selling point for his engine and make a name for himself. On that point he does seem very relunctant to involve anyone in coding the game...
There are more videos of Infinity here if anyone is interested. ____________ Blue Binary |

I'm not sure why, but I wouldn't be able to stomach contributing freely to a proprietary engine. That is, doing work for free for someone so they can line their pockets.

I played StarWars Lego with my nephew just a few weeks ago. I was playing the ICP last night...
I don't see any similarities.
I played a lot of Wing Commander, and Infinity remineds me a bit of that. Played some Starlancer too. It seems very similar to many of the space flight sims I've played...
I never got into the Tie Fighter games, so can't compare it to that...
It definitely reminds me of the old days when I enjoyed spaceflight sims, something EVE simply doesn't do... My Infinity Ship Designs: T-Y9, Hauler |
