First of all, I liked the story. (: It gave m a new appreciation for the Aura avatar.
Now to my main point/question, I started Eve in April. To me, it was jarring how the tutorial voices would drastically change without rhyme or reason.
Is there a blog or thread that touches on the decision for the change. I mean I can understand how an actress could be unavailable for a time. But, I would think CCP would still try to get her back (barring death of course) down the line.

This is what I mean. Where can I read about this? Also, when I hear "Warp drive activated," which voice am I hearing? To me, that voice is the true Aura.

Great story! I really liked how you showed in two ways how elevated us pod pilots are in New Eden society. With cloning not being an option for her because of costs and legal matters in contrast to how accessible and cheap it is for us "elite". Also showing just how lucrative and rewarding doing something as mundane as being the voice of our AI can be, even for a person of her status. You really have a talent for subtly showing just how epic and grand it is to be a capsuleer! Thanks for the awesome fiction.

Abraxas, if your still reading... I have a question, well more like a question/statement I guess.
It seems to me that in this case your writing style follows more closely to a video documentary than it does to a short story. Not saying this is a bad thing, just wondering how you choose the style and what influences that. It seems like a couple other stories were perhaps influenced by a more cinematic way of doing things.

This is a wonderful story, and if I'd known more about Aura, I might not have turned her off the first chance I had...
I was slightly distracted when I realized that one plot element was pulled from the real world and turned on its head (I wonder if Salman Rushdie has ever heard of EVE?), but I liked the idea, too, and it works perfectly with what we know about Amarian society.
I wish there was a bit more depth to the religious zealots who poisoned her. What faction were they from? What were their ideals? And perhaps a bit more of what made the Gallentean translation so offensive to some -- biases rooted in the age-old rift between the two races per chance?
I like the narrative interlaced with the speech excerpts, but thank you for tipping off the source of the excerpts less than halfway though the story. I'd rather be mystified by the plot of a story, not it's structure.
One final wish: Where Barak describes the suitcase-in-the-snow scene in his poem being replaced with the crying-man-on-the-street sceneā I would love to see a few lines of the actual poems recited there, rather than just description. Just call me an old Tolkien fanatic, but I think verse is a great way to show the contrasts between cultures. Just a guess, but I'd expect ridged structure in the original Amarian and a more free style in the translation.
Please, Abraxas, throw us a few nuggets of verse to whet our literary appetites!

Good story, but is there any reason so many of your stories take that form?
*Story One*
*Story Two*
*Story One*
etc.
It can get really distracting, in fact annoying, to read. I love that style, but not when the sections are so small. Why do you do it this way so often? ----------------------------- "Oh, we're sorry, you had the 'NakedAmarrChicks' bit flagged in your account somehow." "Wait, why was there even a flag for that to begin with?" "..." |

The only real difference between the chronicle and short story section is the length of the pieces.
Originally by: Fortior I remember the outcry when the really old comp. generated Aura was replaced by the human aura with the metallic touch
As far as I'm concerned, that was just Excena getting to better grips with her voicebox.

It's not so much cinematic as it is a harkening back to the "infodump" style that reigned before I started writing these stories. It's not a style I use much, the reasons for which can be found in many of my older forum posts, but for this kind of narrative it seemed fitting. Excena's story - which is intended to be the 'dead' background thread of the piece - needed to be told in a dry, nonkinetic manner, because otherwise it would've overwhelmed Barak's speech.

Actually, for quite a while now I've been planning to write an EVE poem. I've got the basic structure in my head, and I'm slowly accruing the subject matter, but it will take a lot of time to write, lest we end up with "There was a young man from Tash-Murkon". I'm sure I'll publish something eventually, but chances are it won't be until mid-2008 when Black Mountain finishes.

Out of the twenty-four I've published, the only ones switching between two threads are Aura, The Greatest Joke, and possibly the Caldari Methods of Torture story. I'd be hard pressed to call that an overwhelming majority. It's a stylistic device that works well when you want to feed the reader a lot of background information while keeping the story going.

yea Caldari Methods of Torture is kinda like it. i would have to agree to you. it almost reminded me of a person that is under going anxiety, and how cloud has a messed up head in Final Fantasy 7.
But i kinda have a Few questions I like to hear answered.
1: Will you ever make more stories that involves in with Science eve?
2: Will you have more in-depth stories about how eve world got started.
3: and, Will you have your stories be published with a RSS feed?
I love your work. and I always look forward to more. If you ever make a Book that involves with Eve-Online, I will buy it.
I MUST READ MORE!

1. Yes. One in particular, about boosters, maximum ship speeds and other such things, has been percolating in my head for nearly a year now. It won't appear until next year, though.
2. Probably not. It's been covered elsewhere in the Prime Fiction, and I'm focused on the present or near-present.
3. Yes. I've put in a request to our Web Cell to make this happen.
And thanks for the kind words. EVE does have a novel coming out, though I'm not its writer. If I ever do write something published on paper, I'll let you guys know.

I'm more worried about the Amarr, though, seeing as how she got famous by defiling their words. But I figure they can just clamp their hands over their ears (or shut off the pod earplugs) and go NANANANANA I CAN'T HEAR YOU every time Aura speaks.
Originally by: Fellonie Why didn't she go bigger? Maybe i am not fully understanding.
I covered this pretty thoroughly here, but in short, it was to keep the narrative grounded in realism and to keep the various parts of the story in tune with one another.

The magnetic depth of the chronicles are what originally sold me on Eve (in Feb 2004), and I can only say I'm thankful that finally there's again a fixed person in charge of them who publishes quality material on a regular (and even more frequent!) basis.
Very nice read.
P.S. I'm trying to write an SF/F story myself, could you direct me to resources and/or discussion forums worth reading? ______________ Join the Family |

Edited by: SpaceDrake Threadspinner on 12/09/2007 19:58:45 Man, I take a break from EVE and you cook up something like THIS, Brax. This... was wonderful. The two threads were intertwined just right, and the story flowed wonderfully. And it's quotable as heck, especially that line, holy crap.
Of course, I also find this one particularly interesting as it's a bit of a counterpoint to a little thing I wrote some time ago. When most parts of their society want to tear each other to bits (and we see some of that here), a Gallente is able to find herself through the works of an Amarrian, and the Amarrian ends up thinking the Gallentean's adaptation of his works may be better than the originals themselves. The whole thing suggests that there may well be a sliver of hope.
Anyway, this is the sort of thing that inspires me to write again - hopefully you guys are still open to putting some of my stuff up in lights.
Great, great job and I hope the rest of your works can be as good as this. Also seconding the request for a full rendition of the poem, someday.

This is probably my #1 favorite chronicle, for many reasons... For my part, I love the little details that give us insights into the mundane things that happen in the EVE universe... for example, what eating utensils will be like in the future...
