Hello folks,
As your about to find out i'm a complete newb with routers... have had broadband for a long time but have recently upgraded to Sky 16mb Broadband and Netgear router. But i have a problem, after a long period of connection my router seems to "disconnect" from the internet??
Its totally random with no pattern. and it won;t reconnect until you change something i.e. the 1st time i turned off my anti-virus and it worked immediately, then the 2nd time (with my anti-v uninstalled) it stopped working about so i unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged it into another port and it started working again.
Sometimes I need to even restart the pc (but even that doesn;t always work). I have replaced the micro-filters and unplugged everything else so the router is the only thing plugged into the wall and it still happens :(
Any idea whats happening? unstable connection?? faulty filters? any help appreciated!!

That sounds like more of an issue with your computer than your router - do you have more than one computer connected to the router? If so make sure the connection dies on both computers first. ------------ Whiners - Unite! Tarminic - 25 Million SP in Forum Warfare. |

first thing to always try is remove unnecessary hardware. So remove the router and see if it is still giving you the problem. if it is, it is a computer problem, if it isn't it is a router problem. -=#=- Angry beer bottles make Kaemonn a sad panda

You remove the router and hook the ethernet cable straight from the modem to the computer, reboot the modem and computer then if you have internet that is reliable then it is the router. -=#=- Angry beer bottles make Kaemonn a sad panda

Edited by: El Codge on 13/08/2007 21:41:40 I'm guessing the router is one with a DSL modem built in?
Do you leave the connection idle for a long time before it disconnects?
If not, how warm is your router getting?
Try ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
If that works, it's your PC, if not, it's the router.

Edited by: Jevus on 13/08/2007 22:47:53 It does tend to happen after its sat idle for a while (i.e. downloading something for hours, or whilst i'm afk in Eve).
Its warm but nothing major. I will give the ipconfig stuff a try and see what happens... I should be able to test it when i get home from work as i left it downloading some stuff when i came to work tonight (working nights ftw btw).
EDIT - Oh and yes its a Router/Modem all in one thing. basically connect it straight o PC via an ethernet cable and plug the other end into the wall and hey presto - Broadband :)

Might be a firewall issue.
With a new install Windows enables its Firewall by default.
Then your antivirus may have a Firewall (not all do but some come bundled that way).
And of course your router itself may have a Firewall.
Not saying this is your issue but something to look in to.

Edited by: smashsmash on 14/08/2007 00:27:31 do you use "straight-through" patch cables? if you are using cross-over cables then it'll drop randomly.

To be honest I had that problem with my Netgear router, it got worse and worse until the router eventually died, I phoned Netgears india call centre which charged me the earth to do really annoying basic tests. Eventually they agreed to send me a free replacement as it was still in warrenty.. That one died again, same symptoms about 6 months later, again I called Netgear who tried to take me though the same expencive 40 min call... and I gave up I replaced it with a Buffalo, apart from the trouble of keeping a cow in the house, and keeping it fed i've had no trouble since.
I'd never touch netgear again.
