Does the range bonus make it viable, especially with antimatter shells?
I'm training for command ships and I'm torn between going with a NH or a Vulture. I have tech 2 heavy missile skills, and can easily get tech 2 hybrids within a couple of weeks.
Is the the big V only useful as a sniper or can it get some decent DPS from 5 blasters? It has the better tank and could hopefully devote space to tackling gear when compared with the NH.
Vulture pilots, what are your experiences?

I hate limiting the use of my ships to what they're designed to do. I want to know what it can do!

You need medium hybrid V for the Vulture anyway, so blasters are just a few extra days of training. I've got quickfit setups (I fly a rail Vulture myself) for the blaster ship and they look alright. Solo performance won't be so good, but if you have a gang to help with the tackling you can put out some pretty good damage with a massive tank.

I wouldn't dream of flying a Vulture with anything less than medium hybrids at lvl 5. But would it need tracking computers? Could I get away with 2 magstabs, 2 PDUs, a shield tank and 2 hybrid damage rigs?

Essentially all of the skills required are the same. If you can fly a properly fitted rail Vulture, you can switch to blasters with a few days of training (mostly small blaster spec IV). Tracking computers are required for a sniper Vulture, but not so useful for a blaster Vulture (you'll probably want tank/tackle mods instead of some marginally-useful range).

Exactly what I was thinking. Can it tank/tackle/do good damage with blasters though? This is the setup I was considering:
Highs: 5x T2/Best named Blasters 2x Nos or warfare links
Meds: T2 EM Hardener T2 Invuln field T2 Large SB T2 Med Electrochemical Cap Booster T2 Afterburner Fleeting Warp Scrambler
Lows: 2x T2 Magstabs 2x T2 PDUs
Rigs: 2x Hybrid collision accelerator
Would this all fit and would it work?

1) MWD is mandatory on all pvp ships. This may require you to change your fitting.
2) No web. You can't solo without one, so you might as well drop the scram too and let someone else tackle.
3) Gun rigs are useless, since they stack with damage mods. Use cap or shield regen/extender rigs, depending on whether you're going active or passive tank.

Taking that into account, here's an alternate fitting:
Highs: 5x T2/Best named Blasters 2x Nos or warfare links
Meds: T2 Invuln field T2 Large SB T2 Med Electrochemical Cap Booster Best named MWD Fleeting Warp Scrambler Best named Webber
Lows: 2x T2 Magstabs 2x T2 PDUs
Rigs: 2x Anti-EM screen reinforcer
I'd need to max out my skills in MWD cap reduction for this one...

That is doable, but I would opt for letting the intys do all the work. Your first setup, with the EM hardener, and add a boost amp or second invulv field. You get the same dps, and a massiver tank.

I also consider the fact that after the Nos nerf, more people will be using neuts, so two nos in the highs would help somewhat with the cap going to guns, tank and mwd all at once. I imagine using the mwd for speed bursts to get in web/scram range and lock the target down.

In my current situation, we don't have enough inty pilots for roaming gang work. We have a policy of "everyone mount at least one webber or scrambler just incase".

You sure you need Med hybrid 5 and not long range targeting 5? and logistics 4.
From what i remember thats what you need after training the nighthawk. Hells
Let me liberate you of your T2 mods. T2 mods are dropping in price, because of invention?? No its because of pirates. |

Medium Hybrid 5 isn't a formal pre-req, what I think he meant is that for a Vulture, which is a Caldari Gunship, you would want Medium Hybrid 5 anyway, since you will want to use T2 guns on it :)

I'd say no, your better off taking some extra time and training gallent cruiser to 5. The Vulture is good for long range combat while boosting your gang, at the very least you probably want to try and fit and XL booster.

XL-booster, huh? I tried it and came up with this. It's DPS isn't very impressive, but even with my poor skills it can run the booster for 8 minutes on it's own, forever if it can get one NOS in.
Low: 2x Reactor Control Unit II 2x Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Medium: Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive X-Large Shield Booster II 2x Invulnerability Field II 2x Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I High: 5x Heavy Ion Blaster II 2x Medium Diminishing Power System Drain I Rigs: 2x Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I

anwyay, Yes, it works very well, i fly from time to time(in loooove with teh astarte myself) problem is you wont make any crazy DPS, and thats a fact, even a thorax WILL outdamge it, but not out-tank it, and there is the fun part.
Your tactic is realy to just wear out your oponent, sooner or later he WILL run out of cap and theres your shot. bu its a slow ship and not mnay engages it, hell most person i have come across runs form it or just doesnt care, as its a very though nut to kill.
ATM i havent lost a pvp fight 1v1 yet in it, we tested what dmg would be needed to shot me down, and it took awhile for 2 t2 ravens and a t2 fitted drake to hurt me, and was all thanks to the 4 heavy NOS the ravens packed.
What you ned in terms of skills is cmd 4, and Med hybrids 5 and blaster spec of some level IS A MUST to get the most out of it, otherwise your beter of in a brutix (with AM shells) the vulture stands out for its blaster-size dmg at 20km+ range with null ammo.
So, to finish of i can post my beloved AND tested setup ;)
5x heavy neutron II with null and void in cargo 2x Medium diminishing NOS (no point fitting faction ones if the nos-nerf coems)
1x DG large shield booster(realy a must to let this ship shine, t2 wont cut it here, 1x booster amp II (t2 is enough, otherwise it gets a BIT pricey to roam in) 1x 24km scram (or any faction range you want) 1x true sansha/DB cap booster w/ 800s, or just the electrochemical if you wanna go cheap 1x Em hard II 1x Invul II (both of these gets VERY expensive if you go faction, and isnt required at all)
2x SS/t2 mag stabs(your choice again) 1x True sansha/DB/t2 Power diagnostic systems(take faction if you can find in loot somewhere, otherwise t2) 1x Damage control II
drones: 5x light ECm drones (yes, they work VERY well i can tell, and saved me alot of times)
rigs: Shield booster cap efficiensy and a Boost cycle reduction
(edit:yes, no propulsion module :/ it isnt always needed as of its large range, just dont bring i on cruiser sized ship romaing ops and your fine)
tanks like a beast and delivers a nice punch and can reach suprisingly far. could switch out the 2 NOSes for gang warfare modules to enhance gang and yourslf even more. Yes, i say pay the price of a nice Shield booster, it makes a large difference and some faction goes pretty cheap off. -----------------------------

Edited by: slothe on 15/08/2007 16:38:30 ive fitted it with neutron blasters and nos and shield extender tank.
works nice.
the only problem is people tend to run once they see it as they think its a bait ship, which it usually is tbh.
My fitting was something like
4 neutrons t2 2 med nos
10mn mwd web disruptor lse t2 passive em plate (dread guristas magnetic scattering amp) large shield booster
2 pds t2 2 mfs
( may need 3 pds 1 mfs)
works pretty nicely.
makes up for medium cap booster by using nos and having large shield extender.
