Hi guys, this is not to do with eve - well it is because i need my pc fixed to play it :)
Yesterday i recieved my new Saphire X1950 Pro AGP graphics card. So i removed all drivers for my old x800pro and went about installing the new one.
I also removed my old SATA hard drive and installed a new SATAII hard-drive. I uninstalled windows and re-installed. I got onto the desktop when windows started first, then i installed the Radeon X1950pro drivers and re-started, now whenever i try to start windows up it goes through the startup screen, it shows 'windows xp' then as it is about to go to the desktop my monitor goes into 'power saving mode' and will not respond.
Iv tried everything i can think of, is it a Power supply issue?
I have a Qtec 550w power supply.
Spec: AMD Athlon 3500+ 64 Asus a8v Mobo Radeon X1950pro Two IDE HD and one SATAII HD 2GB RAM
Please help!

Edited by: *****Monger on 16/08/2007 16:33:12 Usually when something like that happens it's to do with an unsupported refresh rate / res combination.
Before windows starts press F8 and choose safe mode.
Does it start up? If so uninstall the card from device manager then reboot.
Can you get into windows now?
If so reload the driver and see what happens then.

Doing it now, it does start in safe mode yes.

try loading windows in safe mode, go into control panel and look up the graphics settings, i think u need to set windows to use the new graphics card as the default card, though u might have already done this, just a thought as i had this to begin with with my geforce 7600gs after replacing the standard one, even though i had installed the new drivers, windows still kept trying to usethe old card that wasnt there,

no ur right the old drivers should not be there, sorry didnt realise u had reinstalled windows aswell, i would still check the settings to make sure that the new graphics card is set as default as windows has its own program for graphics when the is no graphics card installed, could be a clash between the 2 programs, 1 needs to be set as default, the windows program is only for when first installing windows on a clean system with no drivers and gives u a basic graphics program to start installing all the new bits, could be wrong though........

I would not worry too much about the HDD's taking 30 seconds to be found...should be a lot sooner than that to be honest but lets stick with the Gfx card issue first
Starting up in safe mode is a good sign...most likely it's a driver or a res/refresh rate issue.
You using the standard ATI drivers or the ones from your card maker?

If your monitor drops to standby, but it looks like the PC is still on (ie: not shut down), I would guess that you've plugged the monitor onto the 2nd gfx card socket, and not told Windows to extend the display onto that socket.
Try plugging the monitor onto the other port and see how you go.

Well i just unplugged the monitor from one of the sockets (while pc was on) and plugged it into the other, the monitor went into power saving mode so i plugged it back into the other and now the monitor is back on so im not sure if that is the problem.
Im installing the catalyst drivers now and will tell you once iv done it.

Does your mobo have onboard graphics ? If it does then Windows will pick that as the default video output.
Here's where it becomes a serious PITA so let me know if you have on board VGA first.

I just tried plugging it into the other socket and it didnt work :( 'Power Saving Mode' still.
Could it be to do with a digital and analogue output?
No i dont have onboard GFX that i know of, my mobo is a standard A8V motherboard.

Edited by: thundachronic on 16/08/2007 18:12:35 OK, now we're getting to the part where I'm normally swearing at the PC and starting to sweat. Swig of beer, ciggy, count to 10 and take 1 step at a time.
If your mobo does have onboard gfx then just look for another blue D sub female connector close to the paraller port, or just below the PS/2 ports. If the monitor loead plugs into it, you have onboard VGA, if it doesn't, then you don't ;)
Power supply is more than adequate so I doubt it would suffer under any Windows stress when that starts to load.
The fact you said you swapped monitor sockets while the PC was on says to me that the PC hasn't shut down, so the standby mode is because something between the gfx card and the monitor isn't happy. Initial indications would lead me to agree with the original replies in that the monitor is being told to display a refresh rate or resolution it can't handle, but you said you recently reformatted so that's not likely.
You can get into safe mode, so the monitor and gfx card both work but something about Windows and it's drivers are f00king things up.
You can see that the gfx card is telling you it has 2 outputs in the display properties, hence why I thought you had the wrong socket.
At a guess I'd say your card probably has a VGA and a DVI output along with a VGA/DVI converter in the box. If you have a CRT monitor then you need to use the D shape VGA output anyway, otherwise an LCD should really be using the DVI.
Erm, try firing up in safe mode again, and go to display properties. First, tell it to display in 800*600 or whatever low res your monitor is happy with and won't flip out at. Then hit the "Identify" button to see what socket Windows thinks your monitor is plugged into. If you get the option, tell it to make this output the default output - make it primary.
edit: forgot to mention to reboot... doh
Let me know what happens :)

I just went into safe mode, removed the drivers, started windows normally.
I then went through the installation process manually, i installed my monitor properly, i then installed the primary x1950 Pro driver, then just as i installed the x1950 pro secondary driver the monitor went off into 'power saving'
I really dont have a clue lol :)

I had the same problem with my X1950pro and the AsRock 4CoreDual-VSTA motherboard. My motherboard has a similar northbridge/southbridge (K8T800 Ultra/VT8237a) as the A8V (K8T800 Pro/VT8237). The symptoms were the same as yours, except the hard drives would power down and the graphics card fan would run at full speed.
I solved the problem by flashing the BIOS to the latest version. Also, i disabled all power saving functions in the BIOS and through Windows "Control Panel --> Power Options".
Make sure your display settings had detected your monitor properly and check that the option for "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is enabled on the monitor tab.
Make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date. You can get them here (VIA), as ASUS had discontinued the model. ____________ Blue Binary |

...Make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date. You can get them here (VIA), as ASUS had discontinued the model.
Can you point out the bios file for me please? I cant seem to find it lol :P
Select the download option of your motherboard (vanilla A8V?). There is a BIOS dated June 2007 there.
EDIT: Be VERY careful when flash it. Read the instructions.
Iv allready flashed to that bios, should i install the hyperion drivers also?

Yes, they will auto install for you when you run it. Try the other solutions i provided as well Thridi.
IIRC the latest Hyperion version is 5.12A. ____________ Blue Binary |

Just a few thoughts,
- install motherboard drivers - obtain latest gcard drivers - upgrage XP to service pack 2 - install direct X - install sata/raid software (if any) - flash the Bios - set motherboard settings to default - review BIOS graphics settings, and ensure its set correctly - Goto google groups (Ive fixed many PC problems there)
Alternatively, Send me your dump file I have some software that can analyse it and tell me precicely what when wrong before the system shutdown, im not sure if a dump file has even been created for your recent errors but it is worth a shot.
To get dump file;
1, goto start 2, select run 3, paste %SystemRoot%\Minidump into the field, and select ok. 4, if you get a list of files sort them in date order and send me the most recent.
leave a message for me ingame and i will send you my real life email address.
If your PC did create a dump file we can fix this buddy.
From what your saying it sounds like the graphics card issue

if your gcard is pci-express, does it has a 6 slot power conecctor?
does your motherboard have a power slot specifically for the gcard?, normally the 4pin power connector that goes into an IDE HDD will fit into this slot, it is normally found at the bottom of your motherboard, tell me the exact name of you motherboard.
If you dont know it, install this software;

As far as I know the ATI Cat drivers need DX installed however it should not cause your monitor to go into power save.
Your card obviously works as is shown when in safe mode (base windows drivers loaded only)
Going through the replies I would be inclined to agree that it "could" be your PSU. When you start putting decent parts into a machine it's more about quality than quantity.

also, is your motherboard power connector 20 or 24 pin?
if its 24, u must have a 24pin lead on your powersupply, some motherboards still work if you use a 20 pin connector on a 24 pin motherboard.
Also check if the 4pin motherboard connector is inserted. your power supply should have one.

Edited by: Traska Gannel on 16/08/2007 20:59:55 Make sure that you aren't setting the display mode any higher than the supported 1280x768 probably at 60Hz - though it could be a bit less. (One source claims it can do 1280x1024 as well but it apparently looks squished). The screen going black often results when the video signal is outside the range that can be displayed by the monitor. Presumably you've also installed a monitor driver. Since it works in VGA and Windows safe mode - you know that at least the computer, video card and monitor operate at minimum levels so the odds are good that the problem is a screen setting or driver issue - though it could still also be a power supply issue.

Look at your card though. A card that new should have extra power from the powersupply connected to it! Did you do this when installing the video card? Nvidia cards will automatically dial back video performance if you dont have the card powered by the powersupply molex connector. Maybe ATI doesnt have this feature and just goes into powersave mode. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. It is strange as it works when you are booting and in safe mode...only when you load up into windows proper and are using the drivers does it screw up...most strange indeed.

I quickly read through your replyÆs, I thought I seen you say you had a onboard video card on the motherboard? If this wrong, please just dis-guard this part of the post.
If you do have a onboard video card, step one would be to go into the bios and disable the on board video, because leaving it on will cause a conflict with the video card your installing.
The next thing is, what kind of monitor are you using? Make sure the monitor you have can support the res youÆre trying to use.
After all that, if the 1950 has a dvi port on back (which it should), you should have a little adapter that came with your video card if you didnÆt buy it as a(OEM). Put the dvi to svga adapter on the dvi port and then run your monitor that way. Even though you have 2 monitor ports in the back of the card, you might have to run it in the primary port (dvi).

Right, i think i may have the problem now.
My monitor came with two cables
DVI-A DVI-D
I am using the DVI-A cable and putting an adaptor on it to turn it from analogue into digital. now after looking at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi
and finding the DVI-D cable that came with my monitor, iv found the monitor DVI-D cable is a DVI-D Single Link.
I havent tried plugging in my DVI-D cable yet because im downloading more drivers, but i will try this in a few min.
Does this seem like it could be the problem? :)

And hello again all... Just read up and caught up with the updates I missed last night. The most interesting thing I noticed was your monitor model, and it's native resolution of 1280x768. Though it isn't a particularly strange one, it's not a standard one you'd normally use - I'd guess the monitor comes with XP drivers so they're worth installing so that Windows knows what resolutions it can and can't use.
As an LCD you also want to be using the DVI-D cable. Not only because you'd have a useless cable laying around otherwise, but it will improve the display qulity. It basically saves the output signal being converted from digital (which is what the gfx card wants to send) to analogue (which is what the adapter is) back to digital (which is what the monitor wants to receive).

Did your new power supply turn up ? And is it installed yet ? Any luck ? Any other news ?
