I got out of a petition a few days ago regarding the bio, length, and problems with formatting them.
What I learned:
+ Biographies have a 1000 character limit. + Formatting (IE: Adding Color, Bolding Text, Underlining Text, Linking Text) counts towards the 1000 character limit.
My question is this. WHY?
1000 character limit? I'm more than OK with that limitation. However counting formatting (the code behind the scenes that add's the color, etc) as part of the formatting? That just doesn't seem right.
I mean, for each piece of color... with the way you're currently handling it... add's tons of characters to the character limit behind the scenes. Formatting in my opinion should in NO WAY count towards the 1000 character limit.
I would LOVE to hear CCP's explanation for this. |

Well I guess some people have overdone it and now there's a limitation. That's probably the standard reason for such changes.

The explanation is probably rather simple. This is just a guess, but it makes sense: The 1000 character limit applies to the meta code of the BIO, not to what you see. Its probably a technical thing. An example would be a program that you can feed an HTML document, with a max size. It also wouldnt care if the document has <a href="blablabla or actual text in it... characters are characters... ____________________ Dont feed the trolls |

The limit applies to formatting fortunately, there already are ugly bios with too much formatting, if the limit only applied to letters, we'd get a design chaos like myspace.
Do you really need to have a fancy bio? I just want to read the content.
If font color and size where that important to make a good description, item descriptions would have more font colors and sizes, but they don't and I think they look good that way.
Just my personal point of view.

Guess why? Because most probably, the storage space on the database is limited to 1000 characters per bio. And as formatting is included into the text body itself, every formattign character has to be stored in that named storage space as well.
It's nothing speical actually.

Edited by: Khanak Hryad on 18/08/2007 00:03:03 the bio is html, or something very close to it (this forum is also the same format). To easily explain it, try putting something in bold in here. it comes up with something like
"[~B] "whatever" [~/B]"
edit: added the ~ to the bold stuff, just to show wat its like instead of bolding whatever i had in there
now, thats 7 extra characters. coloring is even more, because its something like
[color=xxxxx]
13 extra.
to compensate for this, they should increase the size limit. I know before Rev 2 update it was bout 3 times as big. Although with a shorter bio, each character takes up less space on the database, so i suppose its for the best...but w/e.
Point is, any editing characters stay in with the limit, thats how the language works.
