I would estimate that a T1 fitted Raven would cost somewhere around 100 million.
A decent (not best) named-module fitted drake will likely out perform a pure T1 fitted Raven, will cost less, and require fewer skills.
Until you have some good skills and equipment to back that Raven, you are probably better off in a Drake in every way.

With the right set of skills you could. I wanted a Raven also but once i started flying my Drake and training my skills correctly, T3 missions have been a walk in the park.

empty raven under 100 mil t1 fitting , best named t1 100 mil minimum , but then again some t2 items will be cheaper then best named
rigs roughly 50 mil depending which rigs offcourse insurance 40 mil
so total will be roughly 300 mil, and then you re ok for all lev 4 missions

Edited by: Zephyr Mallory on 17/08/2007 16:48:59 L4 Missions in a drake are doable but it really lacks the DPS unless you have really good missiles and drones skills (those 5 lights it fields can make a huge difference) then it's most likely just not going to be able to break the tanks of some of the larger battleships. Of course a Raven (base cost: ~91,000,000.00 isk) is going to have higher damge output than a Drake at longer ranges when fitted with Cruise Missile Launchers (another 6 to 12 million each for decent ones at least), it can be very difficult to tank hard enough to solo some of the larger L4 Missions, however with the changes made in missions like the Extravaganzas where once you get familiar with the mission you can control the spawns, you may no longer need to have a super awesome tank.
So anyway, in answer to your questions - A.) Cost of a fully fitted T1 Raven (using Average named modules, no rigs or insurane!(another 40mil)) will be approximately 100,000,000 isk, maybe more if you want to spring for Arbalest Cruise Launchers, etc. B.) to make the money to get a raven to run level 4 missions in, Level 3 missions are probably the best bet, make sure you loot and salvage everything you can for maximum profit and keep an eye out for any named modules you loot that could save you a dime when outfitting your raven, like ballistic controls, named power diagnostics, or shield hardeners.

Depends on what skills you have. I would start with 2 rat specific shield hardeners and 2 shield extenders. Then fill in the remaining mid slots with shield extenders, rechargers, or hardeners depending on what your skills will allow. If you already have good tanking skills you could probably swap in a afterburner for some extra speed.
In your low's, fit ballistic controls or shield power releys. I prefer the ballistic controls as they will boost the Drakes weak dps.
In your hi's, you put missile lauchers, obviously. Heavy launchers tend to get the best results for mission running. Arbalest launchers have the lowest fitting requirements, so will leave more room for your other mods, if you can afford them.

I flew most lvl4s in a drake (T2 fittings) and only a few were hard. I solokilled all in both Recon 1 and 2, and it held beautifully in 3 as well although I had to warp out of recon 1 a few times. It is a bit slow though since the dps is less than a raven (with good skills)

My mission setup is:
High: 7 Heavy Missile Launchers
Mid: 2 Large Shield Extender 2 xxx Amplifier 2 yyy Amplifier (xxx and yyy are the type of damages dealt by the rats in that particular mission, sometimes, like with gurista, 3 kinetic and 1 thermal works even better).
Low: 2 Ballistic Control System 2 Shield Power Relay
Rig: 3 Core Defense Field Purger I
Switch mods to T2 / Named as fast as you can and you got a very nice mission boat.

I use a slight variant of the above, as frankly I cant be bothered to swap fittings, and it is not required for lvl 3 running.
Mids: 2x large extenders 2x rechargers 2x invulnerability fields
same high/low and rigs as above, mid/low slot is all T2, I have never had trouble tanking any lvl 3, and this with very poor skills, only trouble is the xxxx-strike 10 part storylines, I cant break the tanks of the 1.2 mill BSes in the last mission/last stage, so bring a friend or bypass them.

My Drake setup is as followed:
mids: 3 large shield extender II 3 shield hardeners II (mission specific)
Lows: 3x shield power relay II 1x power diagnostic II (training engenering to lvl 5 right now)

my drake build:
- 7 malkuth (lower CPU need) heavy launchers + 1 named (again lowest CPU need) small remote repper (to fix up damage to drones). - (not entirely sure of my med slot loadout. i think 3 large shield extenders, 10mn AB, shield recharger and active hardener). - 2 PDS, 1 damage control, 1 BCU
Gives me a pretty decent passive tank and plenty of stopping power against cruisers. I'm currently working my drone skills up because with the calibre of frigate sized ships level 3 throws at you, not having 5 T2 scout drones will mean breaking the tank of those heavier frigates is going to take forever.

Ravens are a lot more skill intensive than a Drake, and require a lot more paying attention to in missions.
With a Drake and Caldari Battlecruiser skill at only II, and focusing on Engineering skills for the time I was doing them, L3s were all cake.
With a Raven you really need to have both good missile and shield skills, along with Capacitor and fitting skills to be able to fly it with any efficiency in L4s.
If you start running them with crappy fittings because you can't get the good stuff on there, bad Cap skills, and low missile skills, you're either going to lose it in short order, or you're going to be warping out a lot... if you're lucky. Remember too that Cruise Missiles are expensive, it costs over 20m for what I consider a "Full restock," (40,000 of each type) and that's at-cost build cost. Have to buy them off the Market and expect to be paying a lot more.
If you rush into a Raven you're going to regret it.
