About a year and a half ago I was looking down the home stretch of college, and things looked grim. Long story short, I stopped playing EVE all together and focued on school, from which I managed to graduate. I got a job, moved to a new city and decided to not continue paying my monthly for EVE, leaving my main stuck out in 0.0.
I generally take breaks from MMOs. I didn't play City of Heroes for about a year before I picked that up again. No biggie there, but with EVE, your characters have these permanent records and last time I applied for a 0.0 corp they were fairly suspicious of my previous game break, which wasn't even as long as a year. I can only imagine what they'll think now.
How do you guys cope with suspicion when you're away from EVE for longer periods of time?

I don't think it's something you should worry much about, honestly. Some corporations (especially ones on the end of an ass-kicking) start becoming very paranoid and enact absurd measures to stave of their imminent defeat. A long time ago I joined a corporation but tended to just mine on my own in a quiet system and ignore corp chat. They had no problem with this until we had a war and were completely unprepared to fight it. They blamed their disorganization on a spy in the corporation, and I was apparently it. My CEO was also an idiot, but that's why I run my own show now.

Just tell them the truth and if they dont believe you move on. No amount of assurance and "im not a spy" is going to change the minds of the paranoid and if anything it will make them even more convenced that you are indeed a threat.

I'm in your case but I own my corp so the problem is different, I need to pay several millions of isk to get my stuff back.
I understand that people would be suspicious if you have no standings/security rating at all or very little. If you have some that means you have played your char at some point and are not a dormant alt.

well if the corp you are applying too is too freaking paranoid you simple say "to amarr with this, im leaving" and thats that... if they cant respect you enough as a junior member then you are only a member of the corp on paper
If you as someone said here, are simply sitting by your own lonesome somewhere in space mining veldspar to your hearts content not even paying attention to corp chat... what in the name of the president are you doing in a corp?? Corp = TEAM PLAY... TEAM = MORE THEN ONE PERSON DOING SOMETHING TOGETHER (notice i said PERSON not CHAR) Seriously, that is one of the lamest things to do if you are an older char... (newer ones tend to do things on their own till they figure out teams are more fun)
soo ehhm... yeah, just find a diff corp if they are being to demanding simple as thar :)

I think anybody in a corp like that who would be suspicious of you needs to get a life. Not everybody lives in front of a computer and plays Eve nonstop for weeks/months/years at a time.
Recently I was applying to join a corp and during my "interview" someone asked me what my goals were.
This is a game. I play it when I have time and when I want a break from RL. Real life is where I have "goals." This is just a game. It's entertainment. Nothing more.

Surely the long term entertainment value is drawn from striving to achieve your goals (personal or otherwise), if you're hear to be entertained you have an idea of what aspects you want to focus your time ingame on?
Back on subject, assuming there's an interview process bring up your concerns relating to how they might view your employment at the begining and flat out ask if it's a problem. There's no dancing around the issue either they give you the same trust as any other recruit or they wont.
