I have a niggling feeling that this may have been done...but I'll say it anyway. Having trained up missiles originally, largely due to the lack of hybrid battleship platforms for Caldari, and made much use of the Ferox as a bastardized missile platform before the Drake appeared on the scene, I've recently started out on hybrid gunnery skills with a view to getting a Rokh and of course, cross training to Gallente to get a ship that's actually able to PvP. I was wondering in the meantime though, since I have BC5 and some pretty nifty shield tanking skills, whether it's even worth getting a Ferox while I wait or whether it's just simply not worth the effort. Thoughts?

Edited by: Janus Duo on 18/08/2007 02:09:32 My "Who says Caldari can't solo" Ferox setup:
5x Heavy Ion Blaster II [120xVoid M] 2x Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II [50xFulmination Rage Assault Missile]
Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I Warp Disruptor II X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator Large Shield Booster II
Damage Control II 2x Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Reactor Control Unit II
Rigs : Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I \ Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I \ Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I \
5x Hobgoblin II or 5x Hornet EC-300s
If you run into a gallente blasterboat load null and stay at 9km or so. You'll hit and he won't. Just hope you don't run into a dual webbing one though! You're actually gonna have a speed advantage on em too if they're armor rigged.
Oh, and if you're into nos switch some of the guns for electrons and fit 2x Med nos instead of the launchers. That'll feck with your range advantage tho.
Note you only do 50dps less with Null and get much better tracking and can fight at ranges up to 10km. Not too shabby for a blaster-boat!
And with luck those speedy minnies will see your ferox, laugh, and MWD right up into web range.

Edited by: Chelmar II on 18/08/2007 02:12:34 The Ferox is flimsy compared to a more specialized hybrid platform (i.e. the Brutix) or a better shield tanker (i.e. the Drake). That said, you can still make (limited) use of your Ferox as a blaster platform:
5x Heavy Electron Blaster II w/ Void or Null 2x Med nos 1x 10MN MWD 1x 20km scram 1x X5 web 1x Large shield booster II 1x Med cap booster II w/ 800s 3x Magstab II 1x DC II
Drones: 5x Warrior II
With BC 5, this should give you a decent but far from spectacular tank, as well as some moderate DPS for a Caldari ship. From my experience in a Blasterox it wasn't worth the effort; after I got my insurance I took up a Brutix

Well you've gotta take advantage of your bonii, namely hybrid range and the resist bonus that helps you still fight even with only rigs doing your shield hardeneing. You want to emphasize your range advantage even with blasters. This means squeaking on the higher tier (ie higher base range) blasters and training your hybrid range skills to max, then betting on your opponents being armor rigged to compensate for caldari brickiness. Then you do unbonused blaster damage from 2x the range of the Gallente blasterboats.
If only the Ferox had an extra mid for dual webbers, then it would be an awesome blaster platform with Caldari ideology. (ie keep the enemy AWAY from you, then use your range to peck em into submission)

A Ferox would die to a gank fitted Brutix - simply due to the fact that the Brutix has the armor tanking bonus. The optimal range bonus only counts for blasters once you get Tech 2 blasters on a Rokh, then you start pushing 20KM + 10 falloff.
5X 250MM Rails II w/ Spike 2X Whatever, Medium Remote Armor Repper
2X Sensor Booster II 1X 10MN MWD 1X Tracking Computer II
2X Mag Stab II, 2X Tracking Enhancer II.
Easy cheap sniper ship that'll hit to 100KM with skills.
Of course you hit the goldmine with either the Vulture (200KM Sniper, Intys, Dictors, Recons stand little chance) or the Rokh (400KM Sniper). The Rokh is a better blaster ship than the Hyperion depending on skills - more tank in the short run, Actual range, 2 or 3% more damage.
The Rokh is a fine, fine ship, as is the Vulture when it comes to sniping. The Eagle isn't good enough to really solo due to its lack of damage output.

Thanks for the replies. Pretty much as I suspected: for blaster work I'm much better of flying Gallente (and it frees up the mid slots for doing useful PvP stuff) and for long range...well, 'sniping' at 100km isn't really a goer to be honest. A T1 fitted Rokh would be more useful in a fleet.
It's a shame, I really liked my first Ferox and I kinda miss seeing them around.

Can actually get the ferox to 130km or above with good skills
