total computer noob looking for advice here, i've been playing eve for over a year and have ammassed (3) accounts, two of them carbear/combat and the last one a pure freighter pilot. the problem is i want to upgrade to a desktop that would allow me to play 2 or posssibly all 3 of my accounts an not die on me. i've been looking at the alienware and voodoo systems but am still scratching my head as to what to get...any advice my fellow eve players can give me would be a big help.
P.S. i'm looking to spend upwards to $5.000 bucks on this system (the ole lady doesn't know *wink*) Pour me a tall one |

Alienware? Voodoo? Waste of money. You don't need nearly that.
An 8800GTX system with 4GB of RAM and a Core 2 Quad will do you just fine for well under 2000 dollars.

how much are those 8800GTX's costing over there atm? could maybe get four of them and set them up in SLI especially if youve got 5k dollah to spend, although if your unsure how to do it yourself, that money may get spent rather quickly paying someone else to do it for you
Either way I'm sure I'll be jealous of the finished machine! Best of luck with it.

4 in SLI is totally pointless, heck 2 is already going over the top. No real point to such a thing when its going to be obselete in a few years anyways. And not as if any game could possibly use so much power in the near future.

There are plenty of companies that build very cheap. Depends on what country you're in which one to use.

To run 2 accounts, maybe even 3, but not in PvP, all you need is a P4 and 512 MB memory. Anything above that will do you well.
So being what current chips allow, you needn't bother spending extra money on big name brands.
I can run Eve on 2 clients with a $500 computer that's a year old (not including monitor). I could also do this on a slightly more expensive (at the time) computer that is 6 years old.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Go to a small computer store and see if they build computers. I believe the chain store Fry's builds PCs. They'll do it for much cheaper than any major retailer. Just tell them you don't know much about PCs but you want a computer that can play the best games for the next 5 years or so.
The site DS linked to looks pretty good too. ------

I have, from them, a Core 2 Duo 2.67Ghz with 2GB of RAM, RAID hard disks, 8800 GTS 640MB (bought before the Core 2 price drop) for 1600 dollars. And the case is awesome too.
Too bad its not my machine, but I use it for encoding

Note that buying parts individually and then having them built/build them yourself is way cheaper than buying pre-built PC's.
you should also take time out to learn about your PC, how to maintain it, how to protect it, etc.
Tweakguides has a great guide to help you with nearly all of the PC maintenance, and is great for all PC users of all levels. Get the most out of your new PC and keep it running smooth. -
