i started like you all did... as a small trader trying to make ones way in this big universe. I began humbly, ratting and blowing things up, while my alt mined away happily, making isk.
Times were good. my mining alt hit retriver easily enough, bought a covetor and began training the skills for it. cash was flowing and i felt i was making a mark for myself. Ratting was making my main a shed of cash and a destroyer was purchased, then a battlecruiser, which is in drydock as i prepare my skills ready to unleash hell.
Anyway, i am a law abiding sort, keeping to myself, unwilling to be any trouble to anyone who doesn't trouble me. Which i felt was fair enough. My trouble began when i bought a hauler though. A nice hauler it was, well equipped, for taking my alts ore to good markets for maximum profit. I made some cash hauling trit for double price and i made a killing on a pile of mexallon at 40% above regional average. I'd only been playing for 20odd days and i felt like a real player, an entrepenuer. i know i'm small fry compared to the vets, but you know, i felt 'progress'
then... tempation came in my path. i was ratting and covering my miner when i saw a cannister in space. i took a look.. and inside was 5500 units of fiery kernite. not a lot of cash to you vets... but to a relatively new entrepaneur like i... a nice sum...
i hesitated... but then, on came Conquest of Steel on my winamp... Steel is the Law... great song, but lets face it... STEAL is the law, it sounded like... destiny touches me... and away i went. hauler came out, and ore is stolen. My breath came fast. paranoia set in. sweat was forming. would i get away with the loot? the answer was yes, as i docked, and despite my law abiding tendancies i felt elated. that was two and a half mining trips with my retiever. for free.
still, i wasn't sure it was the life for me. except. now i couldnt resist stealing whatever i saw. wrecks atht hand't been looted were stripped down and salvaged. i made a blueprint, and a couple of mil from random loot. i also stone several unnattended cans worth of ore, further boosting my stash. yet i never engaged in face to face larceny.
but my time was coming... i saw a covetor minibg. he had drones out, two mining and two combat drones. he also had a fat can beside him. i paused to take stock. then brought the hauler. warp to 0 on a bookmark for his can. siphon his loot and run. 12000k of ore. almost a full haul. nice... and you know what? as i was warping away, i was praying he'd attack me with his drones, so i could hall out my Battlecruiser, come back and blow him apart for loot. I felt a brief moment of shame, which diminished as i put the ore in my cargo, then i realised, if the ore wasn't protected, it became mine by default, as life is cruel!
my remorse now gone, i made a pact to myself that if an oppertunity presented itself for profit i would take it. after all, Steel (steal) is the law. right? =)

Congrats on finding out how good being bad is, however, can flipping is pretty lame in the grand scheme of things, in time hopefully you will move on to killing stuff just because you want to. Perhaps further down the line get involved in a gatecamp or two, you may like it or you may think its the most boring thing you have ever done but until you try it you will never know. Next step -5, once you get there you might as well go all the way, maybe a spell out in 0.0, not cos it makes you an elite but just so you get to experience things eveyone should see and do.
Good luck

Rise... lord Jenira
its a very, very slippery slope.
this is how most pirates begin. if you think stealing from cans is fun, try killing pilots i bet youŠll be -10 in a few months. there is really no way around it.

Technically, he's not can flipping. He's looting the cans.
Can flipping involves jettisoning the loot back into space in his own can. ----------------------------------------------- Could someone tally how many times this topic has been beat to death? |

I don't think he's saying it's lame, as much as he's saying it's the newb's version of piracy. And that there are better ways of being an outlaw out there. ___________

Good story mate.
Listen, don't just take opportunist targets, sell your soul to the fun side of life and jump on the Piracy rollercoaster. You'll get so much enjoyment out of this I promise you.
Keep your mining alt pulling in the extra isk if you like but use your main to wreak havoc and actually enjoy Eve, instead of it becoming another job. Why work at making isk when you can have the blast of a lifetime nicking it from others.
Trains leaving, get on soon!

"Enforcement of mining taxes" is always a great pvp start for the solo player. It's not true piracy, but it can help teach you the fundamentals. Use a frigate to flip the can, or do the BattleBadger thing. You're more likely to get a fight that way. And fights can be far more profitable than a load of kernite. Plus coming back in a BC is a bit questionable.

yes I am saying ore theft is lame, and ok he is starting out, but he is starting in the wrong way. Just my opinion.
If you want to pirate, go to low sec, try stealing cans there. The problem I have with these so called pirates stealing ore in high sec, is that they are protected by concord...what pirate needs concord protection You expect concord to shoot you, not help you out.
Ore theft is not an introduction to piracy, it is an intro to griefing.
If you want to become a criminal, then step it up, fly to low sec or 0.0 and shoot things.
Ore theft is in the same league as contract scamming. Those guys are good, but they never claim to be pirates

Well, maybe not everyone is as cool as you and dives right in. At least he's headed in the fun direction.
I didn't start pirating by flipping cans either, but that's not the point.

Noob + lowsec == dead noob.. Honestly, it's a crappy place to get started.. The skillpoint gap simply decimates them until they have at least 2-3 months under their belts.. Even joining an established pirate group isn't a terribly good idea.. The poor nub just gets ignored as useless (which they are) or worse, used as an expendable tackler.. Ont he other hand, ore theft to pick fights is a good beginning.. Hulks and retrievers can be mean to nub frigates, they're a good challenge.. Ore theft just to steal and then come back and pwn with a big ship is lame though.. Think you're being a bit elitist Flinx, and you're forgetting what it's like to be nub.. Or maybe you never were? Who knows..

Skillpoints arn't the problem. It's experience. It's the killer instinct. It's that gut feeling that you get when you know it's a trap. That's the big gap.

How long are you flagged to your victim after you loot his can or wreck?
I also don't see why people in this thread are defending the victims. Why don't they get a secure cans like everyone else? That was the first thing we did in our mining operation -- Badger + Secure Can. Don't think of it as "griefing", think of it as boosting the market for secure cans.

God no I am still a noob now mate
We are all still learning. What I am trying to say is...you will not learn anything about pvp while stealing cans. You need to have your ship blown up many times before you can work out how to fit it for action
Ore theft does not give you experience of fighting, and that is the heart of piracy.
Forget the skill points, you can still have a truck load of fun in low sec in a well fitted T1 cruiser. Many people with a zillion more skill points than you have bad set ups in npc ships. It's fun and easy to pop them
Evidence
To the OP, I am not mocking you for trying. I just want to point you in the correct direction

Edited by: wictro on 24/08/2007 09:36:20 get a hauler with 3000/6000/9000m3 cargo.
warp to steroid belt in 0.8-1.0
secure cans can't be anchored anymore in "no rat space"
set your overview to show secure cans only.
"look at" the cans.
they have a light on them. green is "not anchored" - red is "anchored in past, when it still was possible"
fly 1500m from the cans with green light, right click, "scoop to cargohold"
300.000 ISK made.
haul the cans to low/no-sec. sell for 1mil each.
when stealing ore, get yourself aligned with the can and some object you can warp to.
open the can inventory, move away from can.
fly full speed (a hauler aint too fast, you have time) past the can.
when under 1500m from can, move ore to cargo, and warp immeadetly.
i was so happy when i noticed that scooping secure cans doesen't flag you! ^_^
i allmost miss empire..
