I am sure there may have been a thread like this on the old forums - and I am a fairly new player to eve (working on my first year) but I am fascinated and would like to know how eve has affected players positively in their real life.
I've heard many stories about video game addictions and how it can "ruin" people's lives, social lives, education - but I would like to think there are many people out there who have been able to or would like to thank the game for having a great impact on any of the afore mentioned traditionally hindered attributes.
Personally coming into eve has been really amazing for me. I have been addicted to games before and this game /is/ addicting, however not for the same reasons as any other escape might be. I found my interactions with other people in the game to be enlightening! I've met people from all different cultures and educations, with different experiences. I feel the game itself breeds a sort of higher-intellect especially when dealing with some of the more intricate parts of the game. (Including but not limited to: politics, market trading, and competetive pvp)
I am asking you to tell me your story on what your experience has been. Obviously you do not have to go into specifics, although those would be an interesting read for sure so I wouldn't be restrictive on how detailed you'd like to go with sharing.
I hope there are others on the forums who would like to read this as well.
Thank you in advance! |

They say laughter is good for your health. EVE and the forums in particular have provided me with a good supply of that. |

There is certainly more comradery in eve that binds people together, than any other games on the market today. |

The game and the forums have always allowed me to have access to some very special form of sarcasm and viciousness I was unable to find elsewhere in such a concentration, that and the tears. Sweet tears <3 |

EVE has given me the desire in real life to learn again, which has prompted me to go back to school for some higher post-secondary education at the ripe ol' age of 27. Unfortunately and ironically, in September when I go back, I will probably have to quit EVE cause it's just too addicting to ignore, so that sucks. But I would say it's still a huge positive :) |

Well this wonderful game has facilitated the 'getting rid' of a couple girls from my life, thank god =P
Apart from that, playing your part in a team, be it the leader, guy who makes plans or the one that goes in first all guns blazing, with or without your fleets support. (Causing many lulz on TS as your pod jumps back through minutes later )
I cant think of anything else off of the top of my head, But there's a few.

It brings me joy to read about Eve, to read the fiction, the forums, EON, the articles on other sites, the blogs, geeking out on the Dev blogs...to play the game, to spend time with my wife playing the game....joy, joy, joy. So yeah, more joy in your life is always a good thing. Also, I laugh a lot when doing all of the above...and that's good too. |

Setting long skills to train and not having to grind (unless you want standings increases) gives time for real life. Being able to pay for PLEX with ISK saves me lots of $$.
Working on fun stuff like API web pages gave me fun ways to learn new web page skills that I use at work now. |

We must have been experiencing different forums, quoting dramatica for truth:
Quote:The official EVE Online forums are a shithole of trolling, butthurt, counter-trolling, counter-counter trolling and faggotry, particularly in CAOD (Corporations, Alliances and Organisation discussion, which can best be described as the forums' equivalent of /b/ for the amount of trolling and drama it contains (but with a lack of goatse), and in EVE General Discussion, where the trolls who don't post in CAOD go, along with butthurt whiners complaining because they got killed or because a specific ship is overpowered because they can't fly it. |

I'd say that the biggest contribution that Eve has given is to teach hundreds of thousands of people an important lesson, how to create, modify, and read spreadsheets. |

I lol'd at this
Eve has taught me to be an utter bastard that trusts noone. Ingame I'd willingly sell my own faeces if I could turn a profit on it.
Oh and I've become pretty damn good with spreadsheets, collecting a list of web resources relating to eve & using api calls/mysql to fill my spreadsheets.

To be honest i was a coward 3 years ago, afraid of founding my own company, not aware of my abilities, in panic for every little ****....
after 3 years of eve.... **** me, you could set the house i am in at fire i'd lighten myself a cigarett at it. There was one paint where i've realizes in some sort i'm godlike, no special powers but there are some points in which noone can beat me, and made me not afraid of using them, even if that meant that i am going to ruin someones life at the end of the day...
eve made me a RL pirate... sort of. which i am personally thankfull to eve, to the community.
In short terms EVE teached me the following: everyone is an *******, which is trying to beat you, mentally, financially, personally, psychologically.... everyone is playing nice face, but everyone is looking for the own benefit, so will i do, and that as hard as i can.

There are 2 ways EvE has effected me in a positive manner directly, a few indirectly.
1. I am learning to program so that I can increase my productivity in Industry in EvE. I have been into computers since the C64. I used to actually make computer chips for a living. During all of that I never learned to program. I had to learn advanced math to get my degree in electronics engineering. I now am using parts of my brain that I thought were extinct.
2. My wife and I are both hardcore gamers. She is a baker by trade and has to get up at 4 am for work. She was playing her games on that schedule and I was playing mine on a schedule where I didn't have to be at work till 10am, so I could play late into the night. Our son is old enough now that I don't have to stay up at night to put him in bed and watch him 24/7, so I decided to spend more time with her. to help our relationship I decided on her schedule. I now get up at 4am and go to bed at 8 or 9. It has raised my metabolism, I have lost weight, and am much healthier now than I was a few months ago.
Indirectly it has helped me in that I thought I was pretty good at poker, because I could crack every "free money" site out there. When you are betting against idiots who can fill up their wallet almost as much as they want, they tend to make stupid bets. When playing poker at evepoker, I discovered that I was in fact NOT the **** at poker. People treat ISK like real money, and for some of them it is. My poker game has improved, and I did not walk into a casino and lose my shirt based on my false knowledge. |

Eve has reinforced some previous ideas that I forgot I knew. I guess in the short run eve hasn't really been all that beneficial however in the long run I feel that good things will happen. |

Exposure to different cultures and types of people that only a medium like EVE would be able to really let me get to know the way I do.
Those guys in the My EVE section push me to be more creative.
And like Yuki said, lots of laughs to be had. It keeps away the depression that normally would be had from the current IRL economy and just the dreary crap of normal life. |
