I bought stargate yesterday since it was on sale and I was going through the extras when I saw this little Tidbit.
Kinda interesting facts in there and they stated a quote I've been saying for a long time. Each star is a sun and each sun can have any number of planets orbiting it. Would it be so hard to believe that out of all those planets and stars that Earth is the only one with life?

You had to watch stargate before you realized that our sun is just like every other star in the sky?
And there's probably one planet out there that sends people out out to our planet to mess with stupid people's heads... it seems to be a common characteristic with all abductees

Well actually I knew that fact since the 80's and I think stargate was made in '93? I had to watch stargate because it was on sale I remember liking that movie.

While the idea that aliens built some of these structures is fascinating I really don't believe they're floating around now abducting fellow rednecks and cows.

Oh dear. Couldn't you atleast write a warning like "von DSniken theories inside" or something. I've never seen a man come up with so much crazy ideas as von DSniken - and tbh, I'm amazed that some people actually refer to him as a scientist.

That was actually covered in the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. Alien abductors are outer space's equivalivent of spoiled, drunk fratboys on roadtrips. They come here to mess with people's heads.

Edited by: Phrixus Zephyr on 26/08/2007 12:51:03 Say 1% of stars are the right star, and 1% of those have planets, and 1% of those planets can hold life, and 1% actually have life but only 1% of those can be considered intelligent, but only 1% of those actually live long enough to create what can be considered a civilisation. Etc etc... (Naturally thats not entirly accurate by any stretch, but you get the idea) With the amount of stars and galaxies, there will still be millions if not more planets capable of sustaining life.
The problem is, in the grand scheme of things, the universe is billions of years old. It took us only 5000-10000 years (ballpark) to go from bashing ourselves over the head, to sending ships to the moon. It only took a few million for us to evolve to where we are now. It took a few hundred for dinosaurs to evolve and then get smack in the face with the nerfbat.
The universe being billions of years old, the chance that our small window of exsistance coincides with another is very, very small. (not impossible)
The problem however is the distance involved, nearest star is 4.3 lightyears, and according to most sources, you wont be going faster than that. So even if 'they' do exsist at the same time as us, you'll never meet them.
