So I've just hopped into my first command ship, the astarte,to cruise around lowsec with gangs or just poking around at war targets or whoever else looks like they'd be fun to shoot. My first impression is that this ship really is just a big deimos, and might even be able to pull off a setup without a cap injector...but that's beside the point. I'm just looking for some general advice, maybe it's my setup, maybe my opponents were just using lots and lots of DPS, but the tank on it really isn't as good as I was hoping (and don't tell me to go get an Eos ). Last night I took mine out and was just cruising around, playing docking games with some war targets, shooting shiny things at gates, and just raising a bit of mayhem. Now it is absolutely no trouble with tanking sentries, but it just doesn't seem to tank as well as I was hoping against other players. It almost even seemed like I was tanking better in shield than armor, but maybe I was just going up against a lot of explosive.
Here's my setup just for the record: 6x neutron/1x ion (no AWU5 yet 4tl...) mwd/scram/web/cap booster 2x mar/dmg control/active exp hardener/eanm/magstab acillary current whatever rig along with an aux. nano pump.
This gives me minimum of 72% resists across the board, with kinetic at something like 84%. If I put on an additional EANM I can get another 6-8% out of all the resists, but as it stands right now I think I like the slightly higher damage output; with my implants and stuff I get 11.3x damage mod from the neutrons.
So is the astarte just not supposed to be "that uber" of a tank, or does my setup suck, or was I just unlucky with who I was facing or what? Or if I want a "real" tank do I just have to get an Eos? Any comments, suggestions, ideas would be much appreciated.

Given that with Neutrons and a single MFS plus a bay of Hammerhead II's and CS IV you should be pushing like 700 or more DPS i think a slightly wobbly tank is pretty fair tbh.
Not that a Dual MAR II tank with 72% resists, a built in rep amount bonus and an aux nano pump can be called wobbly..... Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions of 400x120 pixels and filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie ([email protected]) |

Well yeah, it's still comparatively a damn good tank, but a good blasterthron will spank me in a 1v1; but I guess that comes down to the size of guns. I was tanking well, I even lasted long enough to shoot a raven for a bit, realize he was nossing me to **** and I couldn't break his tank, de-aggro, and get through the gate as his friends came to start pounding on me too. Maybe in my corp's new locale there are just fewer n00bs than I'm used to shooting.

hmm...also an interesting idea. I also find myself liking to use infiltrators/valkyries over straight hammerheads becuase there is just something so nice about doing all 4 damage types Given that I'm not typically using hammerheads anyway switching to ecm drones isn't even forgoing that much dps.

EDIT:
also i think the astarte is a gang ship... but can work against pve ships that dont have res. to hybrid dmg types

The Astarte isn't made to tank, if you want to tank take the Eos (altough you don't seem to hear that). The Astarte is an insane DMG-Dealer with a decent Tank.
Going solo normally means pack a bunch of ECM Drones (like someone said above) and most of the time Antimatter is doing better DMG then Void (or even better faction antimatter) because you are not always shooting big targets (not to mention the extra cap needed to shoot).
And about that getting spanked by a Mega thing.... I really doubt that because he is shooting at your highest resists!

I usually carry mostly null on me becuase it's cheaper than faction ammo, does decent dps, and the range is a big plus. It takes a while (well...20 seconds in a while in battle) to get into range, get the web on the target, and slow myself down enough to start hitting well after disengagning the mwd. I like the ability to start putting damage out early, so I usually pack null for my standard encounters. Then I carry a bit of void for when I know I'm gonna be shooting something BC sized or up, and just swap it out before battle. Void is cheaper than faction ammo anyway for similar dps :)
And either the mega I tried to 1v1 was uber or I just suck, becuase I was just not doing enough damage to tank him long enough to take him out (although he did mention something about 30k+ armor, so maybe he had a trick up his sleeve too).
