The directional scanner should integrate with the solar system map. When I am using scan probes and I select a probe, it creates a bubble on the map that shows me the coverage of the probe. The directional scanner should work that way as well. If you have it open while in the solar system map, it should show a large bubble of coverage. As the scanner is narrowed to 180, it will show a half sphere and so on down to the point where it is showing only the narrow cone of the scan at 5 degrees. This would make the onboard ship scanner far more useful.

This is a simple and useful change with no down-sides or balance issues. I like it.

Well there is one vote in favor. There are several small changes that could be made in the UI that would have a great impact.

I would love to be able to specify what degrees I want to scan rather then having to turn my whole ship.
Give us a topdown view sort of like the tactical overlay with the ability to set your degree's.
Say I am point towards gate X and I want to scan the gate thats immediatly to my right.. So let me scan between 0 and 90 degrees to my right side rather then having to turn my ship and guesstamate if I'm pointed correctly. ------------ This is not War... This is pest control - Dalek Sek

Nice idea. It would also be nice for Exploration, as you could use it to set the visible sphere to 4au without having to drop a probe to check it.

You mean the camera, right? Having to turn the ship would be pretty funny.
Considering it's a 3 dimensional space, I think the current way is easy enough. Still, it'd be nice for other reasons to have a "heading" system, so as long as we could keep scan direction under camera control if we wanted, I'd have no objections. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. To tag onto Rells' thread, there's a change to the scanner that I would like: Default settings!
It's a pain to swap between different ranges, and then type in the kilometers wrong.
Critical ranges are: 2000km 2.0M km 5AU 10AU 15AU
and converting between AU and KM back and forth is a royal pain! --- PvP Training: www.agony-unleashed.com, "Veni, Vidi, Caedi" |

Dear god, yes. Something like that. Or a slider. Something. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

EVE used to have something like that, when there was no system map. It was a small system map in your scanner window, but it showed the system in 2D. Even then, it was much more easier to scan.
I totaly support the idea.
The system scanner work like sphear radar. Every radar, even the simpliest one can give you the bearing of the contact. I dont see the point of scanning 360 degrees, then 180, then 90 and so on.
What I want to see is when you use the system scanner is a visual representation of the bearing of the contacts. Maybe rays on the System, radiating form your ship, to the direction of the contact.
Also every radar can give you the aprox range to the contact, but this wil be too much in eve.
The best way is rays in the bearing of the contact a list of the found items, as it is now, but without a relation which ray to what type of contact points.

It still does, press F11 when you are in space, and it appears in the lower right corner. Unfortunately I will need to upgrade to a widescreen monitor to use it effectively. --- PvP Training: www.agony-unleashed.com, "Veni, Vidi, Caedi" |

Sounds good, or just bring back the old directional scanner interface that had the wee map. That was fine by me although the "cone" it showed was very basic and did not take range into consideration, it still worked well enough. "No map" doesn't work well at all.
I suppose there is the F11 deal, but that takes up so much real esate on an already cluttered interface, and that can't be pined, can it? -AS |

And how about general improvement to the SS map. It's bloody awful IMO.
And what is the "magic" setting from our overview that would allow us to see probes on scan without having to un-check "use overview settings"? ---- I am Super Cool

I think the original poster's idea is great, I actually expected the solar system map and scanner to work this way and was disappointed when it didn't.

I would actually like this as well, it'd be nice to be able to just type the angle and range in and hit scan, instead of messing with the camera and the slider bar for angles. Furthermore, if this displayed the way the tactical overlay does, it would be convenient as it wouldn't add another window covering the screen.

This makes a lot of sense, and it'd be really cool to have the ability to save new presets for this similar to how the overview works, and make it possible to just click the current selected range and select the new one from a dropdown menu or something.
Another thing I'd like to see, is the ability to track multiple scan results. If I scan at 180, see 20 ships, scan at 90, see 10, it'd be nice to be able to quickly compare those results and know which ships were missing. It should also remove the ships that show up in multiple scans from the less precise and/or older scan results.
It'd also be nice to be able to right-click on a scanned target and copy-paste or just announce the scanner related information on it (Blackbird in System x km from me, between 0-90 degrees), or perhaps give a "dump" of all results of a scan, i.e., jump through a gate, hit a 360 degree scan, press a button and it lists every ship on the scanner. Maybe that'd make things too easy though. ;)
