Hello all. I'm on my third trial account already and have gone through the tutorials including the youtube ones on scanning probes and got the hang of it (and loving it) and have decided on the salvaging profession. This one NPC agent mentioned being an instant multi-millionarie by being a salvager and I am curious if it is true for any of the experienced salvagers. I have been hearing more about mining (and mining haters) and so very few on salvaging, which is discouraging me a little bit. I love the idea of exploring ruins and ship wreckages for loots. I would also love to join a Corp of Salvagers if there is such a thing as well when I activate my account in a few days. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

Salvaging is definitely a profession that will net you decent amounts of isk for time put in especially when you are a new player. This can be done solo very easily.
There are plenty of corps out there that are "Salvage" corps (Read ninja salvage) which are more interested in ganking the mission runners than making money via salvaging activities.
You sound like you will be interested in exploration. I highly recommend this to a new player as the high sec sites can be done solo with a little trial and error. The rewards can be phenomenal.
If you have further questions don't hesitate to pop me a mail.

I'm about 11 days into my trial, and have been an avid salvager since doing my first level few 1's. That's the thing, it's hard to support yourself doing the exciting salvage ops - like derelict spacecraft. From my experience, the key to salvage is quantity. Do a couple level 1 or 2 missions [especially those with a lot of mobs], bookmark the spots, then come back in a proper salvage rig.
Here is the best advice I can give you from my limited experience:
1. Don't leave a single wreck un-salvaged. Those crappy circuits and conduits that you get can go for 50-100k a piece. I'm savaging in a Cormorant for about 1-2 hours a day, and making about 2-4M/day.
2. Have an afterburner equipped. No exceptions. Nothing is worse than having to go 81km at 270mps.
3. Music. Put some on. I prefer 90's rock...a friend I salvage with listens to Bach. |

Thank you! That really boosted my motivation greatly! Yes, I'm very much into exploration. |

Depends on the type of salvaging. If you like salvaging behind level 4 missionrunners (Which is probably the most reliable form of it) then Suddenly Ninjas exists (Though they are more into looting/ganking/the shadier side of salvaging than just pure harvesting). If "ninjasalvaging" seems interesting I wrote this on the topic
Another option is to roam around the faction warfare lowsec areas looking for Elite (t2) frigate/cruiser wrecks. They can be stupidly profitable depending on your luck... a single Intact Armor Plate goes for around 30 million ISK. Only downside here is that you have to be on your toes and not get shot, but it's not too difficult, and great ISK for a newbie.
Exploration as mentioned above is another pretty sweet option...I did the profession sites (radar/magnetometric) in lowsec myself for awhile and made a fair bit of money . The hisec sites won't make you that much money (for a long term player...for a newbie it'll be a shitload) but once you get on your feet you could move down to lowsec which has more abundant, and much better, sites.
If it's the "into the unknown" you like, you may want to look into joining a wormhole corp in the longer term. |

Neat, which ship do you use? I just got the afterburner skill. Where can I find/buy the afterburner equipment? I wonder if running a mission from an agent would provide me one.
Music? Heh, I'm profoundly deaf and damned proud of it. I would hit it up with a tv episode torrent such as Farscape or Cleopatra 2525 and chug energy drinks. |

What would you suggest for a newbie like me to purchase or find something to protect myself with? I'm trying to learn all the skills on shields and such. I read that the Imicus is hard-shelled and hopefully that'll help a bit and especially good for scanning and salvaging.

I use a Cormorant - because a Noctis is WAY out of my price-range and I can't use industrial ships on a trial account [not that Indy's are great for salvaging I hear]. From what I understand, Destroyers make the best salvage boats until you get more skills --> cash --> Noctis
Afterburners drop like Warrior tears [sorry, WoW joke] from Guristas. The 1MN burners [frigate size - which is what you use on a destroyer] also go for about 20-25k in Jita - so buying them is fine too.
So...I guess music is out the door then... |

Right now I only have the Imicus and Navitas. I'll need to work my way to get the Cormorant.
Where would I find those Guristas? Would the 1MN burners fit on the Imicus for now?
Music is still great, I still like to feel them when I can. The loud bass is great. |

Yeah, the Imicus will work fine. Load a shield extender and a 1MN Burner into the mids, a cargo expander into the low, and a pair of Salvager I's into the highs. You'll be defenseless, so if someone you don't know shows up --> GTFO.
BTW - the Catalyst [Gallente destroyer] is just as good for salvage ops - if not better. So just get whichever of the two is cheapest.
Edit: Guristas are in Caldari space. TBH, buying them would be simpler since they're so cheap. |

You're not going to fight people off in a salvage ship...Even if you're an experienced player. Your defense is speed and knowledge. If you fly a fast, agile ship (fit speed/agility mods and a microwarpdrive) while salvaging you should be able to GTFO before anything tackles you if you're paying attention. If you don't...then such a ship can be fit out very cheaply, so you won't have lost much.
An Imicus is not a good salvager, because it's a bit of a brick. It's more of a scanner. If you're ninjasalvaging or in lowsec, you want another ship....one that's fast, and agile. For exploration, your ship will need to fight a little bit (though the rats in hisec radar/magnetometric sites are very easy). It's worth noting you need hacking/archaeology skills to do radar/mag sites respectively. An Imicus with its 15 m^3 drone bay could probably get away with this, actually...Though normally when doing exploration you have both a scanship and another ship to run what you find.
Also, even if the Imicus is pretty hard to destroy for a frigate, it won't help you. Against players, you will be warp scrambled and thus not going anywhere.
For lowsec salvaging you don't really need a scanner at all, so I'd just fit up a cheap, fast salvage ship.
Quote:BTW - the Catalyst [Gallente destroyer] is just as good for salvage ops - if not better. So just get whichever of the two is cheapest.
No. The catalyst is a brick (as are all destroyers) making them **** for salvaging. The only time a catalyst is better is when you're
a) not in a dangerous situation,
and
b) In a situation where you can use tractor beams (which is only if you created the wrecks or they are abandoned).
None of the situations the OP mentioned will involve either of those. The Imicus is also not a good salvager because it's slow.
OP: I recommend looking at an Incursus. It's fast and has 3 hislots for salvagers. I would make sure you have Salvaging to at least 3, though. Each level of salvaging gives one salvager I 5% chance to salvage a wreck. At Salvaging I, each salvager only has a 5% chance to salvage a wreck, and you CANNOT salvage t2 wrecks. At salvaging III, however, each salvager has a 15% chance.

because of the robust market it makes little sense to try to fit yourself out with loot. Figure out what modules would work best on your ship. If you have them from loot, great. If not, you can buy them for a pittance on the market.
A microwarpdrive would probably be better for you. Personally, my salvage fits have both a MWD and an afterburner. The MWD is good for burning large distances or getting out of danger, whereas the AB is a more controllable, less-cap-intensive speed boost. |

What I do is find a L4 agent, then go to a system next door and scan. Usually I find a L4 mission's remains and all the fine salvage. I net about 3mil a trip. |
