I have done some research on how salvaging work and I would like to present my results to the community.
I have the salvaging skill at level 1 and I don't use any rigs.
After successfully salvaging 174 ships, I had done a total of 522 salvaging attempts (including the successful ones). Out of the 174 successful salvages, 89 had loot.
Assuming that each salvage attempt is independent of the other salvage attempts, the estimate for the probability of a successful salvage is 33.33% with a standard deviation of 0.9726%. Given that a salvage is successful, the estimated probability for the wreck to contain any loot is 51.15% with a standard deviation of 1.894%.
It is worth mentioning that all the wrecks I salvaged was small wrecks in level 1 missions.
Now, still assuming that the salvaging attempts are independent, the expected number of salvaging attempts needed to successfully salvage a wreck is 1/0.3333=3, that is, on average 3 attempts is needed. As each attempt takes 10 seconds, the salvage time will be 30 seconds on average.
It is also worth noting that if you are using two salvagers, it is better to salvage two different wrecks at the same time than using both salvagers on the same wreck. The loss in using both salvagers on the same wreck is 3 seconds per wreck on average. For three wrecks, the loss in using all salvagers on the same wreck instead of three different wrecks is 4.2 seconds per wreck on average. These results depend on the probability to successfully salvage. If, for instance, the probability to successfully salvage is 50%, these numbers will be 3.3 and 4.8 seconds respectively. Thus, as your salvaging skill improve it is even more important do disperse the use of the salvagers.
I'm not sure if anyone else find this interesting, but I like to know the probabilities and expected times though. :)
I will be back with more results as I progress. I would like to estimate the impact of training salvaging to level 2. Also, I would like to estimate the effect of installing salvaging rigs. A third thing is to see the impact of salvaging bigger ship wrecks.
Cheers,
Jonai
