the gfx card doesn't do much in eve at the moment, but the lag could well be on your end.
try clearing some of the apps that run on startup maybe?
what's your internet connection like?

Edited by: Patch86 on 23/08/2007 14:53:25 A 5500 should do OK. If anything is causing system lag it'd be that Athlon, although that seems plenty muscly enough for EVE too.
Have you tried all the usual suspects; defrag, spyware scan, close down background apps, and such?

If you turn off all effects, turn off sound and zoom out as much as possible then it could be possible.
I have one of those a few cards ago and tbh, I would'nt touch the fx series with a barge poll.
It is probably do-able, but you wont see much detail.

spybot s&d is my personal favourite, but you could try running ad-aware by lavasoft just to see if any things being missed. ad-aware is marginally less proactive than s&d though, so i don't expect there to be much difference.
theres also a very nifty app called autoruns that might help clear some of the crap that starts automatically. i find most of the slowdown i get is from an accumulation of various ****y agents, which i slash and burn periodically. careful though, just deleting everything would be a very bad move indeed!

FX5500 is just a slightly overclocked FX5200--its a really really old bottom-of-the-line card and odds are you won't get more than 10-20 FPS in empty space if you're lucky.

Edited by: DubanFP on 23/08/2007 16:07:51 I have a GeForce FX 5500 and I can run EVE very easily. Actually I can run pretty much ANY game easily, except for a couple of the newest ones because it doesn't support pixil shader 2.0 "A requirement for all the newest game releases".
Sorry Dark Shikari, but the Geforce FX 5500 does very well for all but the newest games. I play pretty much lag-free even in the 200+ player battles for 49-u. ___________

An FX5500 can hardly play Unreal Tournament 2004, let alone today's games... what do you mean by "lag-free"? My 7700 Go can hardly get 10 FPS in a fleet battle with all effects disabled. I can barely play NWN2 on lowest details with a card about 12 times faster than yours.

I use a FX5500 for EVE, and everything runs fine. The same could be said for everything up to HL2 as well, at about medium settings. I think DS's beloved Linux builds don't like the 5500's, because mines perfectly adequete for my gaming needs.

Eh don't know why you have so much trouble, but i don't. I just zoom out a bit and FPS is never a problem "assuming you've done control+alt+shift E & T". I don't know why you're having problems.
Course if i play for 3-4 hours I sometimes have to turn everything off for 10 minutes since it tends to overheat when used for a while. ___________

Actually It sounds like they're planning on making EVE easier on the graphics cards with the upgrade. That and i run everything on medium-high settings with a resolution of 1024x768 easily.
Though certain effects are really hard on the system in major battles so you have to shut them off using Ctrl+alt+shift+ "E" & "T". Those ones tend to be a bit killer when largescale but other then that like i've said i play pretty much stutter free even in the most intense of situations.
The lag problem probebly lies elsewhere. ___________

EVE doesn't have a "Linux build," nor do I use Linux except in the form of Cygwin, which I have replaced the Windows command prompt with.

I used to use this card and yes, it is playable. Just don't expect crazy FPS might max about 25 in space. Ussually in the 10-20 range.

My 6600 GT gives me no problems in eve unless it's a fleet battle, and it's been a long time since I've seen anything close. It can handle BF2 and such. Maybe it's the GT on the end, I have no clue and don't much care, but I have seen eve played on worse systems than yours and it should be playable.
About lag when looking at certain things. When I updated my drivers a while ago, I began to see major lag in various situations like that. Looking at the sun cut my FPS in half for example. Clearing the eve cache fixed the problem.

My old computer was a P4 2.8 GHz.
It had a GeForce Ti4200 gfx card (ancient, but fairly comparable to the FX5500 I think). With that setup, EVE was playable with decent fps. If tons of ships or those smoke/fog things in missions were on-screen, fps would drop to very low.
I briefly upgraded the gfx card to a 7600GT which meant that the basic fps (in empty space and such) weren't really affected, but what it did was seriously lower the impact that multiple ships and the smoke/fog in missions have on fps.
Now I have a Core2Duo 2.4 GHz with a 7950GT gfx card and the fps is very high in all conditions.
Conclude on that what you want, but that's my experience anyway
