Ok, I'm new, but I've been dillegently reading all the guides I can get my hands on.
Unfortunately, many of the guides are extremely old, and CCP has alot of patches so It's really hard for a new player to figure this stuff out.
So, my questions:
Invention killed the T2 lottery?
If yes, what's the point of R&D agents?
How are research installations related to R&D agents?
Why can't I find a research installation that isn't in use for the next 23 days?

RP Points are used to Get Datacores, Which are in Turn used in invention.

Yes, their playerguide is hopelessly out of date and they make little to no effort to correct their lack of documentation.
The agents are now only good for trading those research points in for datacores which you can sell for isk or use to invent t2 stuff, which will give you a limited run blueprint copy. It takes a lot of training and investment to be able to invent, and it's not all that profitable in most cases.

As Frug said, it takes a lot of time and investment in order to even start being profitable.
However the datacores themselves sell quite nicely on the market if you're unwilling or unable to get into invention.

For the moment invention is a new way to make T2
If you are new player forget about T2 lottery, old players have tons of alt with tons of RP points waiting for T2 BPO ... (if there will be othen in the future)

R&D Agents gives rd points that can be transformed in datacore
Datacore are major components in invention

If for you "research installations" are NPC labs, there is no relation between agents and labs
Everybody can use research NPC labs.

The number of labs is fixed, the number of player doing research or production increase.
So labs have huge waiting queue.
ME Labs : Most problematical for new player. Most of labs are too much used because people doesnt understand the ME equation and are searching some BPO to 200 ME
PL Labs : No pb for them in empire i beleive
Copy Labs : Huge pb since invention. Invention needs copy, copy lab are in very few quantities even in POS so there is no more copy lab availlable.
CCP is creating a new POS mobile lab with more copy slots ... so the pb will perhaps be less critical in a few month.
Invention labs : Not check since a long time ... but i beleive there is always free slots every where
If you want to make research your main job I urge you to join a corporation with a POS in order to work on BPO with no wait.

Permanent.
Apart from the tiny issue that no dev has confirmed it, other than as a mumble in some odd forum thread.
