I've seen jet cans last anywhere from 3 hours to over 24 hours...

Sure your not talking about secure cans? I was under the impression normal cans last two hours ... could be wrong though. I never let one reach two hours old so I have never tried it.

Interesting to know -
I'm curious what rules they use regarding it - if there is a "timer" on when they pop. does it start from when you log off. or have they no longer got that function in game..

Don't know when they changed it to two hours, personally I don't care much for reliving the feeling of seeing a container with 22.5k kernite go poof after an hour.

Jet can = Jettisoned Can, NOT secure or regular can off the market... |

I've used them all the time for over an hour without them going *pop* if I remember the original formula for them was 1 hour + random time, but that was ages ago. So I'm not sure, I just know that when I have a full can over 1 1/2 hour old I get nervous...

It's at least 16 hours. I stopped mining in a belt for the night (04:23 game time) and when i got back from school the next day, the can was still there with some Dark Ochre that the hauler hadnt had space for in it (20:19 game time).

16 hours eh? sweet! That should make mining a lot easier :-) While we are on the subject does anyone know the duration of secure cans as well? I heard that this is weeks rather than hours.
Cheers all!

AFAIK presently they survive two hours + some random time.

All the evidence I've collected - including the sob stories from people who saw 22,000 omber go bang after 62 minutes, so don't risk anything above an hour - suggests that what happens is, they last for one hour, after which, every minute that goes past there's a small percentage chance of their destruction. Consequently it's *possible*, in theory, for a jettison can to last for a month; but the odds against it are - forgive the pun - astronomical. They frequently do last for several hours, even close to a whole day, but it's not something you should ever rely on. Particularly since you can throw out a new one every 3 minutes to keep it refreshed.

I agree with Baldour, I regularly have a can for no longer than 1 hour. I have seen them pop after 90 minutes so refresh at the 1 hour mark, this may be old news but a good way to know is just to name the can with your name and then the minutes on the hour you dropped it. For example if you drop a can at say 10:30 p.m., just name the can "Joe (30)" this way you know just by quick glance that your can is 15 minutes old at 10:45 when you look at your watch, i dont use the tiny clock on the bottom left of screen, too small :) Simple BUT you would be amazed at how many miners do NOT know how long they're cans really are.

DonŠt count on that. They usually go poof after 2 hours. Sometimes they last longer, they donŠt survive reboots and IŠve heard from people seeing them pop after <2 hours.
If you want to be on the safe side make a new can every hour.

Back in October I left a secure can in a belt and I stumbled upon it the other day, so thats 4 months and counting |

There is no timer per say on cans.
CCP database (db) system uses a garbage collection rountine to remove unused objects from db.
This saves memory and reduces fragmentation of the database.
Cans are considered unused after 1 hour. So depending on system usage, number of junk items in system, number of users etc. cans could last anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours. However I would recommend refreshing cans at least once every 2 hours as a rule of thumb.
