So I've had this problem for some time and I'm simply out of ideas to try and resolve it. I'll be playing EVE and after 15 - 60 minutes of play EVE hard locks my system over the course of about 15 seconds. That is to say, it starts to slow down a bit (I can still alt-tab and open task manager) and then a few moments later the system HDD light goes solid for about 3 seconds and the system is totally frozen to the point I need to power it down and bring it back up.
I've run diagnostics on the entire system and everything passed it's checks, so I figure it might be a driver issue. As far as I know I'm using the latest available drivers for everything.
Anyone have any thoughts? If any further information is needed please let me know. I appreciate it.

Sounds suspiciously like the system is clocking itself down due to heat. I know that Pentium CPUs do this, I am unsure of AMD.

I suppose that is a possibility. Would clocking itself down result it a hard lock though?
Anyhow, I'll try to cool it down a bit and see if that helps. I appreciate the suggestion.

On a whim I unchecked Audio Enabled and EVE seems to not be freezing anymore. I'm going to turn it back and see if it locks.
I have a Creative X-Fi XtremeAudio and a friend of mine mentioned he thought he'd heard something about that soundcard having compatibility issues with EVE. Does anyone know if this is the case?

To answer the clocking down question, yes it would. Pentium CPUs are designed to clock down at certain temperatures. If memory serves, they will continue doing so till they shut down.

I have the XtremeAudio soundcard and I, too, have this locking issue. Disabling sound fixed my issue. However, I'm wanting to see what this new patch does for me.

No one has been able to duplicate this issue? This is the only game on which I am having this problem, and I'd greatly appreciate a fix.

I have been having this bad for about a week. not sure when it started. I have gone through the freezing posts and can say that shutting down every possible XP service does NOT have an impact. Like many others, my machine would lock for about 3 to 4 seconds, however, I noticed that the mouse remained completely unaffected. I ran anoher program and it would never show any sign of a problem, so I concluded it was intrinsic to the EVE client. Several suggestions about sound / chat logs / other were made, but only sound and chat were not something I had already tried. Seeing as the sound did not suffer during the 3 second freeze, I figured it more likely to be associated with the chat logs. Since turning off the logs 30 minutes ago, I have had no issues. Hopefully it will remain that way. Running the FPS monitor, I am back to having a dip from 45 FPS (average) to about 10 with almost an immediate recovery, thus i have an occasional hitch....maybe half a second, not a problem when compared to the 4 seconds of wondering how many times you were hit while the screen sat there frozen. But as before, the brief hitch is ALWAYS accompanied by a burst of HD activity.
Been an hour...still ok.
good luck all, Jeff

Yep, Eve has issues within the client. I've been referring to this behavior as "stutter". There is some hope that there will be a decent reduction when Trinity 2 arrives. Not because the renderer is rendering better or faster but because it hopefully won't need to wait on the HDD for model and texture data and other equivalent improvements with the simulator and gui related data. Basically decouple the HDD fetches as well as the network ones.

You don't have the same issue as Bandus and I do. After about 15-60 minutes of play, the game HARD LOCKS and I have to restart my system. There's no stutter, no warning, no sound glitch - NOTHING.
I've run my memory iso tests, RAM is good. I've run an HDD iso test, Hard Drive is good. GPUs are good. A lot of people have mentioned something about the XtremeAudio cards hard-locking various "older" games. Not sure if this is what I'm experiencing, but I certainly DO have this card.

The audio problems are well known. Been that way in various forms for years. I just leave sound disabled. It's easier to hear everyone on TS anyway.

I've got these sound problems, too. Before CCP messed around with the sound acceleration and made some weird link into the "audio" menu, everything was fine. I had hardware acceleration set to low in my configuration panel and had no problems. Now try running 2 clients at the same time. One client has sound enabled and hardware acceleration disabled, while the other client has sound+hardware acceleration disabled. You can turn off sound for the second client, but you cannot turn off the hardware acceleration. Each time you uncheck it and leave the menu, the game ignores what you've just done and re-activates the sound acceleration. This leads to: constant crashes and alot of unnecessary ship losses. The only solution is to turn off your sound. :/
