'ransoming' something? I've read that in a few posts, but not quite sure how this is accomplished. I'm new to the game and was just wondering.

The idea is to lock down a ship so it cannot escape and will clearly die if the person who has them locked down so chooses.
The aggressor then offers a ransom. Basically you transfer X-amount of ISK to them and they will let you go.
Why would they do this and why would the target pay up? Well, if done right both sides can come out better than if they just kill the ship. The ransomer, if they kill the target ship, only make money on whatever drops off. Depending on what mods are fitted and what blows up with the ship this may amount to pocket change and hardly worth filling up cargo with. The target, if they do not pay up, stands to lose the ship and all their mods and deal with the hassle of replacement and, possibly if they get podded too, the cost of a new clone and perhaps implants. All told it can be much less of a loss to pay the pirate than to lose the ship.
Of course the devil is in the details and striking a fair price rests on many things but this is the theory.

I don't think New Yorker's ransom well, something tells me they'd rather ram their car into you just to ruin your day rather then let you get off with their money.

A friend and I were laughing at the concept of 'ganking' cars at one of the local intersections on 10 speed bicycles... Of course, I'm 37 and 'mildly' out of shape but hey, why should that stop me...
Using flashlights to 'warp scramble'..
