Here's my problem:
Recently I was told that it was possible for a Rokh to outmine a Hulk. First off, is this true? Secondly, I can fly a Rokh in 11 days, and a Hulk in 35 days. Is it worth it to go for the Rokh then for the Hulk? Or am I better off sticking with my Retriever and waiting for the Hulk?

They compare the Hulk and the Rokh slightly biasedly *not a real word but you get the point, or should at least*
Stick with the mining barges and go for the Hulk in my opinion. With completely maxed skills and such the Hulk can mine pretty well, but if I'm not mistaken, there are still things you can't put on it, such as Ice Miners and the like. In that situation, the Hulk wins.
I also believe the Rokh has very very significantly less cargo space, so you are doing a lot of jet can mining in a rokh vs in cargo mining with the hulk.
Not a big miner myself, but it doesn't make sense when you crunch the numbers to go with the rokh for mining.

I /THINK/ they are nerfing the mods that made the Rohk better. I could be horribly wrong.

Yes id say stick to the Hulk. In order to make the Rokh out mine the hulk you would have to install some of those new mining upgrades. they are first of all very expensive and 2nd they are not working atm because their bonus are beeing changed. So buying a Rokh would mean less ore yeld and a hell of a lot more work moveing ore to the jet cans.

last time i did the calculations a rokh could outmine a retriever but not a covetor, and since the hulk > covetor i dont believe the rokh > hulk, tho i did all this number crunching before they dropped in named mining upgrades and whatnots. Still IIRC i dont think a Rokh came anywhere near what a Hulk can do.
However as no one in the Bladesmith Mining and Development Consortium mines (or develops anything for that matter - ironic, ain't it?) i'm far from the expert on such matters.

On paper, yes a rokh can outmine a hulk. That is true, due to the new upgrades (though they get changed today/morrow).
But outmining a hulk in a BS is like using 500 men to dig a ditch, rather than using a bulldozer. You may get the job done faster, but its a lot more hassel.
Go for the hulk. Its worth it in the end.

As mentioned earlier, the only way a Rokh can out-mine a Hulk is using the new mining upgrades, which don't actually work and are in the pipeline to be fixed (nerfed). Without bothering to do actual numbers, I've always worked on the following for mining capacity:
Procurer, Osprey, Retriever, Rokh/Geddon/Mega/Hyp/etc, Covetor, Hulk.
Keep in mind that using a battleship to mine usually means staggering your lasers and emptying your hold into a can every 30 seconds - which is a lot of work.
If you're going for Ice, then Procurer, Retriever, Covetor, Hulk, Mackinaw (yes Mack is better than Hulk for ice, look at the bonuses).

The fact that a Rokh could out-mine a Hulk was precisely why named MLUs were offlined and set to be nerfed... today.
Battleships, however, have one advantage IMO-they can take a lot more heat. However, in raw mining ability, Hulk (or Mackinaw for ice) > everything. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

A properly setup hulk can resist all belt spawns excluding some officer spawns. Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Mail [email protected] if you have questions. -Hango

Thanks for the input guys. I've decided to just stick it out with the Hulk. The Rokh did look appetizing for a bit, but in the long run a Hulk would be much more profitable, especially in 0 sec.

Any man and his dog can train up and mine in a Rokh, but when you show up at a belt with a Hulk or better yet, a fleet of hulks, people know you're serious about mining. It's even more impressive with BS and Carrier fleet support in 0.0.

True dat.
Also there is one important factor few people take into account...cargo space. In a rokh, I needed to fit a couple T2 cargo expanders to handle a single cycle of ore from all the lasers. That means i had to xfer ore to a jetcan EVERY 60 seconds. if i didnt use expanders and staggered em, that woulda been probly every 30 seconds. Believe me after a while, it is NOT fun, cuz you cant stop to really do anything else, like look at internet **** or anything, or you'll miss a transfer
on a hulk, (or any barge) the longer cycles and greater cargo space give you a chance at some distraction so you dont go insane (not that i advocate going AFK in lowsec while your hulk chews up roids...thats just silly, but you get the point)

Get the Hulk. You can fit 2 mining upgrades on it, tech II strip miners, and tech II crystals, nothing will out mine you, period.
