Its been somewhat quiet on our end. Mainly because Zapataro, Loxyrider, spiralJunkie and myself have been building the EVE TV set, setting up countless PCs and over all getting ready for the weekend.
The Alliance Tournament will begin at 3pm Game Time on Friday for the next 2 weekends, a wmv file free to the community and Dev guests on the show.
XxAngelxX, Stavros, Nubiam, Trev, Verone, Ifni, jamesw, KIAEddZ and StevieSG head out in the next day or so to be in front of the camera for the next two weekends.
Well... will leave it to the boys to post their little production logs in a bit, time to get back to work.

It seems any work I'm involved in generally boils down to Xyliana at the top of the steps, telling me where to haul stuff. Boxes of E-ONs, Crates of equipment, Chairs, Desks, Computers...it's all the same thing. Sometimes I do some presenting too _

Please tell the boys to stop calling her "XXX Angel XXX", by the way. For those of us in the States, at least, "triple-X" has an alternative connotation she might not appreciate.

Edited by: LoxyRider on 03/09/2007 17:37:13 Ok since everyone else has epic failed at this I'll add some content here now that the first weekend is done.
Pre-broadcast worries
We arrived in Iceland back on Sunday the 26th and spent the week basically going around in circles panicking about 3 rather important issues.
1) Holy crap we have no set. 2) Holy crap we have no internet. 3) Holy crap we have no idea how to stream this.
Needless to say these problems had us worrying just a tiny tiny bit. For the first time the set was not based in the CCP offices but just down the road about 5 minutes away, in a office room above a garden furniture store (yes we're still wondering who in Iceland would want garden furniture). This meant that getting support from CCP was a little harder then in the past when we could just go into the next room and cry in the corner until they gave us attention.
The set was a complete joy and wonderful experience to build, and we all thank Xyliana and her wonderful idea to cover all the windows in thick cardboard boards that were too small (or large in places) and also needed to be painted that very specific "internet spaceship" gray. Several days of putting up board, pulling it back down, taping, putting board back up, painting bits here and there and finally putting several banners in front of the whole mess later the set was sorted :D.
Meanwhile we were still very worried about the inter-tubes, by Tuesday we still had no connection whatsoever and by that evening while we were finally connected it would still have been faster to record to tape and then mail it out to each and every one of you... in the second class mail. Thankfully over the next few days Magnus (marketing guru and chaser up of ISPs) and others got it all sorted and we had our high speed up line just in time.
Leading us to the final problem of working out how the heck we actually send tens of thousands of eagerly waiting Eve players the fruits of our labor. After consulting with several people, sorting out a server package, we were left late Thursday night trying to sort out our streaming PC and its software. This involved 1) getting it to actually work and 2) hopefully working out how to output two streams (one high and one low) so that everyone could watch. Here we all owe a massive thanks to GM Xamother who stayed with us until 1am and somehow (we suspect some sort of Icelandic pixie magic) sorted out all the software so that the stream worked perfectly, and it would even send you the low or high version depending on your own connection. Much to the delight of Zapatero who had been tasked with all things server wise and was starting to wish that he could get back to the slightly more relaxed setting of writing EON.

Friday
Who on Earth thought a show on internet spaceships was a good idea???
The clock counts down as we quickly put things in place. The studio equipment arrived on the Thursday but Friday morning we were still setting up all the lights, testing equipment and panicking again about the streaming pc. But as we came up to 15:00 GMT everything settled down, all was in place, everything seemed to work and we went live for the first day of the tournament.
20:30 and weÆre done, since you have of course all watched the show I donÆt need to go into it that much. The talent leave the building to go act very responsibly at a respectable dinking establishment leaving Xyliana, Zapatero and myself in the studio with the recorded stream to work with.
Getting the matches available on our website for people to view was a very important new part of our broadcast to us. We knew it would be a lot of work and extra hours but we felt it would be very much worth it (and I think it was (EDIT: Xyliana just looked up the stats and the match player has had over 200 thousand views at this point!)). So for the first time we settled into transferring hundreds of GBs to various pcs and started to cut them up into the specific matches and some commentary either before or after whichever gave the most information about the fight. Once done and exported these were converted and uploaded, thankfully something that could be done automatically overnight but it would be 2am until we even got to that point. 3am and weÆre home, 8am weÆre awake and on our way back for day two.
The weekend
Again things went to plan, the mornings spent finishing up the previous dayÆs matches, and turning them online on the website before preparing the studio for another days worth of broadcasting.
During the first weekend I was switching between two roles, in game camera man and vision mixer. The first is harder then you think. Keeping your client looking at the best bits of the action for up to 15minutes while coordinating (in silence since weÆre next to the commentators) with the other camera and watching the streaming screen so we know whoÆs screen is being used at the time. That said I defiantly donÆt envy the job of the commentators sometimes having to speak for a whole 15minute match where not even a single ship diesà
Vision mixing brings on the stress but got easier with time. We have 3 studio cameras on the ôsetö, 1 camera on the commentators which shares a line with the tape deck (meaning no tape to commentators camera transitions) and 2 pc view inputs (the in game cameras). Vision mixing basically means your switching between all these cameras while communicating with Spiral, Stevie and the commentators through their earpieces and with the GM team running the tournament through IRC and also sorting through several tapes holding pre made videos (the intro movie, transitions, adverts, etc..).
The end of the first weekend
So that wraps up the first weekend. During the week weÆll finish uploading the rest of the matches to the player, film the weekly Eve Tv show, get some pre made videos ready to show during the final Sunday (possibly a tour of the CCP office which would be great to show you), and maybe, just maybe get some sleep!
