just talking about subnets,
there are 3 non routable (for internal networks) ip ranges
192.168.1 (a) 172.16 (b) 10. (c)
these are non routable, to create more ips the subnet is divided repectivly, 255.255.255, 255.255, 255. (all left out are 0's) and indicates what part is the network and what part is the host.
i think what you paragraph is describing is dividing a subnet into 2 logical nodes (segments) within one subnet (VLSM) and it is just saying you need a WAN link (wide area network) that supprts VLSM so it can route to said segments, and if it cant do this then you would have to be on the same subnet/segment which would only be 250 hosts, when they needed 500.
not a full answer with networks its so easy to rabbit on for ages, and iv missed some bits out, but thats roughly what its saying.
ps - id take ip structure over literature every day of the week :)

omg subneting, i havent done that in over a year.
its really fun once you get in the groove, im still "studying"for my ccna and i honestly cant wait till i get to that part of the book.
subneting is like a big puzzle, its freaking awsome
listen to me on bob radio, heavy metal, random babbling, and live forum coverage. |

It's easy. The class subnet of the MTU cross-phases to the two trains, one from Cincinnati, the other from Detroit, causing a quantum buildup in the warp drive.
Make sense?

No, your not, just go get the answers from test king or troytec to take your test. You cant find routers that only use routing protocols that old. Its a stupid example. I presume the above came out of a Cisco networking course. Which is pretty much the only place that cares about RIP and classful routing anymore.

I did figure it out after I tracked down a different source on VLSM and the whole subnetting thing. It's a CCNA degree, like someone guessed, and whoever wrote their course material needs to be shot

Just go pay the 30 bucks or whatever it is these days and cheat. I can tell you for certain that their $125 a shot tests are waisting your time and the butt loads of money you have already invested.
It is going to be sooo rare that you will ever have to build an access list from scratch or ensure your vty ports are secure or build a setup from the ground up. All that router config is saved and you are just going to slap that running config in that router and save it and make a couple of changes. They should do much more on analysing the statistics on your eth ports and vpn for troubleshooting.
All the certification exams are like this. Microsoft's tests are just as ******** and ambiguous. They all invision networks that dont exist of completely their own gear.

Lifesaver if you can't get your head round subnets. VLSM gives me headaches, I don't understand it at all but I can answer the exam questions on it right 9 ot of 10 times which is fine by me.
Really should be studying ot my CCNA 3 exam, exam is in like... 2 weeks I think. -----

CCNA is crazy, i do this stuff for my job, at least 8 hours a day, yet some of the things they expect u to know is silly and will never be needed, thats the only problem with exams, cisco, citrix, ms all of them do it :(

Better to understand somthing that you might only need to use once or twice than look like a fool when it comes up and you don't know.
Plus for example, you kinda need to understand Classful routing to know why Clasless routing became necisary... -----

very true and for the most part i understand the whole bit, does annoy me when i re read my ccna books and im like, damn i should have known that, seeing as ir ead the books several times and have a job directly connected to all of it, oh well more to learn i guess, bah!

Just reconfigure the isolinear chips to act as parallel pairs and introduce a phase variance of 3-5% in the main deflector to compensate for any random tetrion spikes.
