Originally by: Drac Destiny Yo, I just downloaded and paid for a month's subscription for EVE online. Anyways I wanted to get into this game before, but have decided now is the time (it looks more and more awesome). I have read and printed tons of game guides, reading various posts here and there and I still very very confused.
In fact I haven't even made a real character yet (just one short trial).
I am very warm to the look of Caldari ships and characters and background, but my aim in the game is to pvp. I am not much of a miner / industrial person.
Anyways the more I read the more I understand that Caldari excels at pve and not pvp and never solo well in pvp compared to other races.
Now I know I can be Caldari race and fly other ships, but I want to aim at being the same race as the ships I pick and not waste too much time on the wrong skills.
So the question is: Is Caldari really that bad at pvp? Can anyone sum up their experiences?
first and foremost, credits to drac for expressing my concerns so nicely :P
i'd like to ask this exact same about amarr, since i read about their limitation due to the nature of lasers. i like the ships tho, but don't want to be seriously "crippled" in pvp, nor in mission running. i can appreciate a good challenge, but everything has its borders, if you know what i mean.
any advice are greatly appreciated.

I'm quite new to the game, so take my remarks with a single grain of salt, if that. That said, from what I have been reading, my understanding is that most any race's ships can be effective in PvP, but that some require you to be a bit more "creative" in terms of setups and strategy.
From what I understand, Gellente and Minmatar ships are probably the best at PvP "out of the box" so to speak, but that with some creativity, Caldari and Amarr ships can potentially be quite dangerous in PvP. I think Gellente and Minmatar do probably have a bit of an advantage in solo PvP, how much I can't say. In gang PvP though, I think all the reaces' ships come into their own. And of course, a skilled player with a sound strategy and a good setup probably means a great deal more in the end than any minor variation in a race's ship's PvP ability.
My advice - play what you want to play, based on aesthetics, or if you are into it like I am, storyline/RP/background considerations.

As a carebear extrordinaire I can really only talk about pve but I have to say that I haven't had any major problems missioning as an Amarr.
Amarr ships are tough, tank them well (use resists not armor plates for pve) and they can take huge amounts of damage. Lasers are stuck with EM and Thermal damage types but kick out enough of each to grind through NPCs pretty steadily. The combination gets you through missions pretty well.
I'll leave pvp to someone else, except to say that the pvp encounters I've lost I would have lost no matter what race I'd been flying - no race is immune to damage type "stupidity"

I've been flying Amarr for a while now, in both PvP and PvE, and haven't had any real problems with them. Though in general they aren't the race to go for if you are looking to get into solo PvP. They are also pretty skill intensive. They don't really start to shine till you have a few million skillpoints in the gunnery and ship skills. And of course recently the Khanid line of Tech II Amarr ships have been changed to be more missile focused, so there is some extra training to do there as well if you are looking at them.
Overall, lasers are good and bad. I like them for PvE a lot because I never have to worry about reloading, and I always have plenty of space for loot. But I also have to consider that I'm pretty much stuck shooting at Blood Raiders and Sanshas, and maybe Serpentis as well, because lasers are rubbish against Guristas and Angels.
In PvP they can have some problems when it comes to resistances as well. Shield tanking ships often melt pretty quickly, but armour tanks can be more of a problem. Being limited to EM and Thermal, and those often being some of the highest resistances on an armour tank can cause problems. But as long as you have some friends with you, which you probably shoot for the most part, you can still do well enough.

Plus there is nothing I am aware of to keep you from loading projectile or hybrid turrets on an Amarr ship. Granted you lose some minor ship bonuses, but you can use lasers most of the time, and load a different turret type when the situation calls for it - e.g. a mission against the Angels.

Like anything else in Eve, there are pros and cons to amarr pvp.
Pros:
1. Best armor tanks in the game. In each class, there is one t1 ship that gets a resistance bonus. Most ships have lots of low slots for all those armor tanking mods. 2. Lots of powergrid and cap. Being able to fit a lot of good stuff is always a bonus 3. No reloading (well, sort of, the crystals do wear out eventually, but it takes a while). Since you rarely have to reload, you can fire continuously. No other weapons system can do this. 4. Can change "ammo" faster than any other race. You can put infrared crystals in for range, and in just one or two seconds you can switch to gamma or multifrequency crystals for up-close combat. 5. Some ships can put out insane dps. 6. t2 pulse lasers are not as limited by range and tracking as t2 blasters or t2 autocannons. The same goes for t1 pulse lasers, blasters, and autocannons.
Cons:
1. Generally slow and not maneuverable. Better than Caldari ships, but outclassed by Minmatar and Gallente vessels. 2. Lasers use more cap then any other gun, so all that "extra" cap really isn't a bonus if you fit lasers. Lasers also use more powergrid, so that "extra" powergrid is more or less required to fit a full rack of lasers. Of course, this assumes that you are using lasers (you don't have to), and most every ship gets a bonus to laser cap use. 3. Not a whole lot of mid slots. Certainly less than Gallente ships, so potential for EWAR/tackling is more limited. 4. Laser damage types (EM and thermal) are easily tanked by armor setups. Once again, you don't have to use lasers. 5. Small cargo holds. You don't need ammo, so cargo holds are, on average, smaller than anyone else's. 6. Not all ships can use drones. Drones can really help in PvP and PvE (so, logically, don't buy a ship that doesn't have a drone bay if this is important to you). Those that can use drones either can't field as many as Gallente ships, or cannot carry enough drones of a certain type (like sentries) to make deploying such drones a realistic tactic.

We Amarr, and better again Khanid have fine ships. Yes solo we can struggle, but a small gang of good players in Amarr ships are deadly.
And you don't really need to be upteen million in skill points to be effective. The Punisher with AC's is a great Tackler frig, and an Arbitrator cruiser is more than capable in a supported fight. ------< Official Sig demarkation line >--------
100% Mod hijack proof
If a Caldari, and an Amarr had an offspring, would it be a Calamari?? Please excuse me, for I need to find some |

We rock
I never regretted rolling Amarr and maxing out the amarr relevant skills. I'm currently trying to raise the missile skills a bit to use the Khanid ships properly but as said, no regrets using lasers and the missiles will always remain a "hobby" not the main thing.
We're good at things others fail at and we fail at things others are good at. We need ANOTHER frigate though and our haulers look crap :)
