I'm just wondering where I can find the super rats that drop the gistii and pith stuff, as well as the other good loot. Thanks for any help you can give.

You find them in belts at random (extremely low chance, I've seen one in my entire EVE career). They are named after their faction: Dread Guristas <shiptype>, True Sansha <shiptype>, Dark Blood <shiptype> etc...
Another kind is found in complexes, which are exploration content.

Rat for long enough and you should find some faction loot. they are fairly rare but nowhere near as rare as the officer spawns which drop <name>'s modified <module> stuff, which sells for silly amounts of cash. Faction loot isn't always great either - a True Sansha Explosive Armour Hardner is worth 5-10 million, and the passive resistance plate is a load of ****.
other than that there's the deadspace loot, which is generally awesome, but unless you join a big alliance you probably won't see much of that since they jealously guard the sites you can obtain it from and farm them 24-7.
you could also try running missions for days on end to get LPs to spend on faction gear. Caldari Navy Missiles, for example, are desirable thingies and don't cost the earth.
Don't run Khanid missions though, because apparently the promised faction goodies aren't in yet. which makes my week of RKN mission whoring a little bit pointless unless i feel the burning desire for a set of +4s. :(

If you're after the Gist X-Type X-Large Shield Booster you would be better off playing the national lottery.

Nope. But IRON can read OP posts
quoting: "as well as other good loot"

Faction stuff drops from commander rats at asteroid belts (true sansha, et.c.) Deadspace stuff (pith, gist, et.c.) drops from Overseers and i think sometimes structures in Deadspace Complexes Officer stuff drops from officers (named ships you will never ever see) --- If someone else from my Corporation or Alliance agrees with me, he will say so. Assume nobody does :) --- WTB: Scorpion wing (left)

When PvP people talk about ratting they tend to get things confused. Gist(ii/um) stuff etc. is complex stuff.
