This musicvideo is amazing in my opinion. And when a friend showed this to me a discussion was born.
Would you do this jump if you got it for free? And it's pretty risky. You could freeze bodyparts etc.

I fail to see how u can jump from there.. u would float into space.. or burn up . how would u get that high without shuttle?

It was a giant helium weather ballon. He wasnt that high as in say the orbiting heighth of the ISS, but at the edge of the atmosphere. It was part of some of the first space experiments in the U.S. to see what the human body could take. That guy actually had a malfunction on his left glove to which his wrist/hand was exposed to the atmosphere and he says it blew up to several times its normal size (his hand) and it got severe frostbite. I dont think he lost it though. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. I was gonna explain it but that guy above me already did :(... so yea balloons can go that high and its not high enough to be without gravity. ISS isn't even without gravity, it just has 'micro gravity'

On August 16th, 1960, as a part of the Air Force research program (Project Excelsior), Air Force Capt. Joseph W. Kittinger Jr. stepped off a platform raised to 102,800 feet over Tularosa, New Mexico by a high-altitude balloon.
The Air Force program was designed to investigate the use of a parachute for escape from a space capsule or high-altitude aircraft. To survive the altitude Kittinger wore a pressure suit like those for astronauts.
After 4 minutes, 36 seconds of free fall Kittinger reached a speed of 714 mph (becoming the only human to break the sound barrier without being enclosed in a machine of any kind) and falling 84,700 feet before opening his parachute. He landed safely after 13 minutes, 45 seconds after jumping.
So he was 31km up midway through the stratosphere.

I thought humans terminal velocity was around 125mph... ? Unless my physics teacher was wrong

That's close to sea level. Remember there's not much air up there, so he could easily have got to 714mph. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Its all about ones surface area, if he was coming down like the human bullet, he could have reached a higher velocity than someone sky diving with their arms fully extended. As well, one needs to realize that the air density, and therefore air resistance, at higher altitude is much lower. He could have broken the sound barrier well before he reached the point in the atmosphere where his body would have reduced his terminal velocity to a much lower value.

When you go THAT high up, the air is MUCH thinner, therefore there is less drag = more speed. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

There's no way in hell I would make a jump like that.
I'd ride on the ballon, though, and push him off at the height. |

The worst part is probably the mind boggling boredom experienced on the ride up. I mean how long did it take?
Still I'd be up for doing that jump

Aslong as you have no orbital velocity you'll feel the effects of gravity, orbit isn't being free of gravity it's just having sufficent speed to fall around the earth. Same is true for the burning up. Same for the burning up if you don't have the air speed... Whew! That was close!" yelled the captain." That runway was short!" "Yeah!" said the copilot, and wide too! |
