Since we all play eve, I assume that most of us can appreciate a good Sci-Fi flick.
Abyss Sphere Close Encounters Alien Event Horizon Contact (one of my favorite movies) Blade Runner Star Wars Matrix (to a lesser extent, more of an action flick) Vanilla Sky twelve monkeys
What are your favorites and why do we not see more somewhat intellignet Sci-Fi movies?!?!?!?! ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

Dune, the one with Sting. Yes it was made during the 70's and suffers from it but its a great flick to watch when you have had 15 beers.

I think all movies on that list actually was intelligent. :) Ive seen them all too.
Its difficult to pick a favorite since they are so different from eachother. But my top three movies on that list is probably Close Encounters, Alien and Matrix.

Its not dead at all. Directors have lots of stuff to get inspired by these days. Parallell universes, quantum theory, worm holes, time travel, crop circles, the moon being hollow, man being a alien experiment, shadow governments, the Illuminati, alien races, intergalactic diplomacy, jesus being a alien, the maya culture, the pyramids, stonehenge, the world being a computer simulation ... should I go on? :)
Just some searches on google and you are on your way on a very interesting journey into the land of the "what if". :)

Typical view of a Hollywood bigwig. As for them SciFi is only about action and making money.
Taking critical overview of todays society through the allegory of a SciFi storyline, is a total nono in that perverted business. ¦cause us is too dumb to get it. Transformers 4tw!
PS. 2001&2010 clearly missing in that list! _ Mal-`Appears we got here just in a nick of time. What does that make us?¦ Zoe-¦Big damn heroes sir.¦ Mal-¦Aint we just.¦ |

"Hey guys, I made 2 good sci-fi films! Now that I'm not making any more, I declare the genre DEAD TO ALL!"
Idiot.
By the nature of sci-fi, the source material completely changes every few years. The kind of sci-fi that was believable in the 60's Star Trek) or popular in the 80's (Star Wars) is completely different to what people expect from sci-fi now. For a start, most of the reputable science that was in Star Trek has long since gone out of fashion, and been replaced by whole new waves of science.
People forget that sci-fi doesn't really deserve to be a genre in it's own right- it's more of a setting for other genres to utilise. You can have sci-fi horror (Alien), sci-fi comedy (Hitchhiker's Guide), sci-fi romance (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), sci-fi drama (more than you can count) and sci-fi action (all the rest) all in equal parts. A sci-fi film is not just instant win because it has some nifty fictional technology or is set in the future- just like any film, it's meant to have something to say in it's own right. I don't believe for a minute that people have run out of things to say...
Anyhow, your list of classics is missing the grand-daddy of sci-fi, 2001: A Space Odyssey. (EDIT: Beaten to it by one post )
And the most recent War of the Worlds was quite decent. Very disturbing. ------

Its not believable though. The Aliens would have killed us a long time ago if they wanted to. There are even paintings of aliens ships in caves from the time Jesus was around. They have been here for a long time. Some people may not believe it, and thats fine, but if you do believe that, the movies where the aliens come in and attack us all seem very... strange. ---

I kinda agree with the list, except for Contact, which was not too great imho. You could also include the Stargate movie which was pretty good. 2001 should be in it.
Thanks for the suggestion of Vanilla Skye btw, will go see this one. -----------------------------------------------

and that's not even considering the fact they have advanced technology, can travel through the vaccuum of space, developed death rays but forgot to check whether the athmosphere and microbiotic life was hostile
Second, it just hit my mind... one of the tripods came from underwater attacking the ferry. Wouldn't that imply that it was air- and watertight ? How do bacteria enter that ?

Edited by: Cornucopian on 31/08/2007 13:14:33 actually I intentionally didnt include 2001 since I dont particularly like it.
The setting and general story is of course very very cool, what with the start of mankind and the monolith.
Due to the time it was released though, it was many peoples very first encounter with realistic space and the setting and actions therein. Since I was born in the early 80s, the first thing I saw as a kid of sci-fi and space was NOT 2001.
Space walking, circular stations, spacetravel computers, etc. My very first real sci-fi encounter, apart from star wars was star trek TNG (which i adored as a young kid, it being released in 1987)
I then pursued all manner of movies and sci-fi flix while growing up. watching predator when you've just turned 12 is HELLA scary, I can tell you. The first time I saw 2001 I was 14.... and all I thought was BOOOOOOOOORING. I mean all the silent scenes and all the stuff. The spacewalking scene...... urgh. IT is of course a groundbreaking flick but totally fails to impress people who have already been actively interested in the fields of space travel and such. The themes in 2001 are weighty and the story is good, it's just interspersed with uselessly long 'space vista' scenes.
This doenst subtract from the amazingly progressive nature of 2001. It's imply that I found myself not being able to appreciate it so awesomely as the rest of the world does.
Incidently I had the same with the LOTR trilogy, the first time I read it. For many people LOTR is really really groundbreaking. I believe this is mainly because for most people LOTR is also their very first fantasy trilogy with such large scope. I read the dragonbone chair and robin assassins trilogy long beofre I started on LOTR, and though I liked it very much I find it just a very very good book, not an all time favortie.
I wont argue that from a literary perspective LOTR has most fantasy trumped: they extensive history created for middle earth, applications of linguistix and such things is really cool. Story wise it didnt catch me like some other fantasy novels I've read. For me, the same goes for 2001.
edit: I do have 2001 in my DVD collection, since I am that kind of loser to get a movie I dont particularly enjoy, but I feel 'should' be in my collection. I tried watching it a few weeks ago, and fell asleep. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

Well it is based on the very old original story by H. G. Wells. You can't really expect a novel written in the 19th century (pre-aircraft, pre-submarine, pre-antibiotics) to have covered every scientific angle, can you?
You've got to take it as what it is- a modernised remake of a classic novel. If you apply the logic of a late Victorian to it instead of the logic of a 21st century film-goer, it makes for a much more satisfying film. ------

Science Fiction movies always have the problem that the more "intelligent" entries are going to have a limited audience, but many of the settings require a large budget. To make them profitable, you have to add a lot of pretty explosions, which makes it somewhat less intelligent (compare Lucas' older THX-1138 to Star Wars).
Therefore, good SF will always be hard to find in Hollywood movies (though there are some notable exceptions). You'll have to look at mediums that can be profitable with a niche audience, like anime and books.
Along those lines:
Gundam (Why do people fight in wars even when it's clear that the people running things are corrupt?)
Ghost in the Shell: SAC (If you can move your consciousness into a computer, what marks the line between human and machines?)
Steamboy (What is the ultimate goal of science? Is it worth pursuing if any given advancement can be altered for military purposes?)

You really have to be in the right mood for 2001. I think having read the book helped.
It's still brilliant though.
The long scenes of space are necessary because space is really big, cold and empty.
Also because they're getting there without the aid of McGuffins.

The long space scenes are actually part of the story, though it's very subtle. This explains things very well.

It was quite good, before you saw the aliens themselves. That utterly ruined the movie for me.
So here we have this big, scary alien race, which, up till now, has only been visible as gargantuan tripods. Nothing is known about them, other than that they are harvesting humans to extract they're blood for terraforming purposes.
And then, when you see them in the cellar scene, they are cutsey cousins of ET, with huge, cute eyes, making chirping sounds, and seem to be adorably curious about human belongings.
