I would like to start getting into some PvP but I plan on living by that golden Eve rule of not flying what you can't afford to loose. In addition, I ony have 1.7 mil SP's which I know will basically make me cannon fodder. My plan is to concentrate on getting a good bank roll going and training up some skills (Such as tier II ships, turrets, tank and drones) While I do it. I can currently do lvl 3 missions but when all is said and done (Killing, running, looting, salvaging)It seems like I can only squeeze a few in a night. The money isn't bad but its not great either. My other option is mining. I am about 3days away from a mining barge. What I am wondering is which do you folks think is a more effective means to make money, Mining or Running lvl 3 missions. Any advice would be great!
Thanks!

You sound like you have a good grasp of where you are and where you want to be. That's more than most n00bs tbh.
If you're really interested in expanding your horizons, drop me an evemail and I'll give you some tips.
Some general advice:-
- Take chances - Train core ship skills, drones and gunnery until you have 10m sp - by then you will have a clearer idea of what you enjoy and you won't curse yourself for wasting training on 'useless' skills - Trade will make you richer than a mining laser ever could - Missions are more fun than mining (only just) and make more cash in Empire

only the biggest mining barge is worth the effort. the other 2 are pants. strip miners are all nice and good, but with a 180 sec cycle you really need 3 of them. i'm mining in a brutix with 5 miner 2's, 2 named miner I's and some drones. anything but the biggest barge would see me mining less than i can now.

Well, I was looking at the mining barge more because you can't mine Ice with a standard ship. My corp currently has access to a sector with Ice and I figured that would be more profitable. Is that true?

it can be not bad, but then the first barge can fit one ice miner, the second 2, the third 3. check the cycle time on an ice miner ;) i still think the first 2 barges are poor.

There is no point training to be a miner because nobody wants you, your toon does not worth good ISKs when you want to sell it, and there is no mining content for miners until the mining capital ship is a must have for 0.0 players. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

Macinaw outmines a Hulk on ice due to the bonuses. Quite profitable if there's a gang of you and someone in gang has nice bonuses/mods.

question to jenny here. were do you think mins come from? there is alot of miner corps. both some that mine 0.0 or empire. and when u in a barge its a easy way to make iskies.
i used to be a miner and i have made alot of iskies that way. its a safe way to make isk. if you do it correctly its not that often you loose things. worst case you loose drone or 2. worst thing about mining imo is that it gets boring. it takes time and effort. and when in a retriver you make ok isk. when you get in bigger barges its alot better.
there is also taking the mining to the next lvl and doing some production.
also done missions . still do. when you reach a lvl 4 mission, there is alot of isk to be made both one the mission rewards and the loyalty points which you can use in the LP store. same thing here is that the missions repeat themselfes. and it will become trivial.
my advice to you is: pvp is hard for a new player. its hard to make isk in a frig fighting other frigs, since they usually dont have expensive fittings. mining is kinda a "safeway" to make isk. its slow and can get boring. (takes friends on ts and alot of beer) doing missions can also be trivial since the missions repeat themself. try doing a bit of everything and get the core skills good. (ships, guns, drones, tank, etc)
good luck to you, and fly safe.

Run missions, but be prepared to do some mining if need be. I'm currently finishing a week of mining in a mission belt. I'll simply cancel the mission when done. Get more value from the ore I've hauled out of here than the agent is paying for a successful finish. Risk vs reward you know.

I've read posts where they say doing lvl IV missions is the best way to make money over time. I have a roommate who does that and he's getting a fat wallet fomr it. I know for me I like trading so that's what I do and I make good money for myself and my corp (through donations). There are others who make good money through mining and production.
I guess what it comes down to is finding something you like doing and then making a profit off of it.

Edited by: Jenny Spitfire on 31/08/2007 21:04:08 You said it yourself, ZazHimself, ex-miner.
Minerals come from loot. There is no future for miners in this game unless the days when mining capital ships are a must for 0.0 players.
A new player is better of training combat/killing skills, run missions then play the 0.0 game. There is nothing for miners in this game. Even farmers knows that. :)
If farmers think mining make so much money, they would not be cloaking in 0.0 or kill drones in 0.0. Sad to be honest to you and new players, miners have no life in eVe. They are the lowest class in the game. Combat characters are more useful, everyone wants combat characters and they sell better for ISKs too. Combat characters are like aristocrats in the game. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

Scamming makes more isk than both if you are good at it.

Highends, from mining mostly, and to a lesser degree L4 mission loot reprocessing. Lowends, and especially tritanium, mostly from reprocessing NPC goods and to a smaller degree macro/sweatshop miners.

Short term mining is better, long term missioning pays off. But if you want to PVP go mining since you will have to go mine to replace your BS after having it destroyed anyway.

I pilot a Hulk, it's very boring mining but you can make decent ISK and miners are essential for any self sufficient 0.0 corp/alliance.
Mission running at lvl 3 is about level with mining in empire with regards to the ISK per hour for me. The big money comes from lvl 4 missions and the loot/salvage they contain.
5 years from now you'll have very good pvp, mining manufacturing skills if you wish, which order you train them is up to you
