Ok, so I created myself a nice little mining alt. She recently learnt to fly a hulk, and can refine quite nicely and use TII mining lasers.
Next on my alt's *Skills To-Do* list is ""manufacturing"". My skill plan up to now has been quite easy to set; see what skills a hulk requires, add them to list. See what skills TII mining lasers require, add to list. Manufacturing though...
Just wondered if somebody could run a rough list of skills off for me whilst I re-read through one of the dozen 'Guide to Manufacturing' that I've got...
Thanks guys.

By far the most important skill for manufaturing is Production Efficiency. In most cases, even 5% waste in manufaturing will destroy all hopes of making a profit.
After that, Mass Production and Advanced Mass Production will increase the number of jobs you can have going. Supply Chain Management is sometimes helpful in that it will let you start and complete jobs while you are away from the station doing other things, for example while mining.
Next I would say that you need to get your trade skills up. Both the SP and practical experience. Most of the money that is made on manufaturing is actually made through buying your materials cheap and selling your products high. To do this you need to understand the market, independent of manufaturing. It doesn't take much to build stuff, almost anyone can do it. The key is knowing what and where to trade stuff.

Technically speaking, the most important skill is Industry as you can't even start manufacturing without it.
One thing bothers me though - on a hulk you can only use strip miners, not mining lasers.

You may also want to look into training your Research and Science skills for eventual expansion into research agents, invention and BPO research. -----

lol, well spotted Marine HK4861. Strip Miner's is what I ment.
My industry skill is of course at 5, along with a few others.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I knew Production Efficiency was one of the skills I needed, Mass Production ,Advanced Mass Production and Supply Chain Management were skills I weren't sure about.
I remember reading something about a big change to research agents coming soon... Or I think I remember...? Something I should be aware of before spending SP on working with research agents? I take it the research agent social skill wouldn't go amiss either? (I forget the name)
What are the key skills I'm looing for in the 'Science and Research' category? - invention, BPO research...?
And I have a trade alt, have been dabbling in the market for a while, so hopefully should be able to combine the two character's abilities quite nicely.
Thanks again for the replies, any more suggestions are more than welcome!

The most recent change (earlier this week) was that the basic research skills are now seeded on the market for a fixed price. Some of these skills used to cost of +50M, now they have a fixed price of 10M. Some of these skills can still be found for less because of over supply from mission loot. These are the individual research field skills such as Graviton Physics. Your regular Social skills will help but are not required.
Otherwise research agents are the same that have been for a while now. The T2 BPO lottery has ended, so Research Points are really only useful for getting Data Cores.

For BPO research you will want Science, Research and Metallurgy for Copying, Production Efficiency and Material Efficiency research respectively.
For invention you will need the two research field skills and the racial encryption skill for that item.

For research you need to do a lot of missioning with a research corp in order to raise your standing, and learn the skill in this corp research field, for instance Gallente Starship Engineering (not recommended too many have it) or Hydrodynamics. You will need Science V and also Research project management if you want to conduct more than one research project.
