Why not let salvagers to be fitted on salvaging ships or logistic ships so miners can be useful to 0.0 gangs and mission runners? It is a bit silly that salvagers can be fitted on any ship in eVe and used by anyone.
It would make player miners and not alts acceptable by 0.0 people and mission. New players will be useful in 0.0 space again, not as throw away tacklers. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

Lost some piece while typing? I don't see a direct link between miners and salvaging ships or logistic ships.

I am saying make salvaging profession a subset of the mining profession or make salvagers a mining specialists. From miners -> seasoned miners -> salvagers. Current mining gameplay is miners -> seasoned miners -> mining specialists (barge pilots) -> mining admirals (capital ships). --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

I said this back when it was first implemented:
Quote: 10/03/2007 12:15:08 Empire mission runners can always contact "Scrapper Corps" and set up deals to have thier loot repro'd and wrecks salvaged. If you don't want to waste the time training, looting, or salvaging; you can always make a little extra isk by having someone who will, do it for you.
Many of the people who would like to salvage usually have to kill thier own rats. Most people willing to salvage can barely run lvl 2 missions because they are either new characters or industialists. If the people actually blowing stuff in lvl 4's would give the people who would do it more wrecks at a faster pace, over time the components would drop in value thus making rigs cheaper.
[Edit] Oh, and while we are on the topic. Please Make a dedicated salvage ORE type salvage ship. Basically a industrial-esque ship able to perform it's duty while not needing to rely on others as much. Basically I see this ship as a combination of multiple ships. Part logistics in that it can haul ammo out to the field, part industrial on return trip it can return loot and salvage back to station. With the help of a combat ship it can field logistic drones with its bay, or combat drones when solo.
Of coarse it would need multiple (ie 6) High slots enough for 3 tractors and 2 salvagers. Normally while salvaging 1 tractor is used up just dragging around a can to throw "garbage" loot in that my destroyer cant carry.
But if it was given a decent cargo bay, something like 3000 m3 (for module loot that you expect us to pick up, not really for "salvage" reasons. an onboard loot reprocessor would be sweet too, but this is my fantasy ship :P) I would actually bring more or the "garbage" back to repro. the ship could get away without the need of a high slot if the cargo bay is this size or larger.
It should have t2 resists and be able to field 50m3 of drones. this way the ship could be take out to lowsec or even 0.0 and be able to "rat" maybe the battlecruisers and frigs and tank the battleships long enough to salvage and get out.
Bonus ideas (just ideas...) 5% increase in chance of salvage retrieval per level. +5/10 Drone Bay capacity per level %increase to resists and cargohold per racial industrial lvl
skill req ideas ship skill multiplier would be 4 for t1 5 for t2
teir 1 salvaging lvl 5 refining 5
teir 2 scrapmetal processing lvl 5
bonus to cargohold size per lvl 10k bonus to tractor beam range
just ideas I had to get out.....
Basically I think the devs were on to a great idea that could have been fun and profitable for a "select" group of individuals. But, they missed the mark and now it is more of a mission runners "chore" added on top of thier looting process. Most of them don't want to do the looting to begin with except they want those few "rare/valuable" mods that come out of looting, so they salvage seeing as they are out there. If it weren't for those modules missioners might actually hire salvagers.
What I think in general is the payouts/lp rewards of the missions themselves should be raised, and new bonus on time rewards should be put in place (sort of how they used to be) but with items missioners actually want to loot. the average combat player should have a scanner (either on board or a midslot and a lowslot version) they should have a set chance to scan wrecks from up to 50k away for tags, chips etc.
so now missioners are doing what they want to do... run missions, and they are getting most of the loot value they would have gotten as bonus'
this leaves the wrecks... so NOW missioners can hire salvagers via contracts local friends etc to go do what Salvagers/Junk collectors do.
was also thinking with the rewards items back idea, maybe if the hire a salvager contract was an option on mission completion that there was a chance base of something like "the salvager you hired found this while processing you wreckage"

Now the problem with salvaging atm is everyone can do it. I'm not saying they shouldn't everyone can mine if they want to... But I can't mine as good as Cribba, and thats how it should be with salvaging also. But just like mining it will probably take a back seat to combat and POS' stuff. salvaging should go hand in hand with mining, industry, astrosurveying in training. make it a big skill tree.
wrecks should stay the way they are now, except you shouldnt be able to open the wreck. the more skilled in salvaging you are the more you should get out of it. this should make up for the fact that less people can do it well. get rid of the chance based salvage system now with a say t2 salvager you get the salvage have a % per lvl chance to then retrieve the modules that are also in the wreck. wrecks should despawn as is, but the server should keep track of the despawns, and on restart it should put "asteroid" type wrecks in belts and in deadspace scanning locations. the more wrecks a system recieves the higher amount of the asteroid: wrecks are spawned. Not 1 asteroid per wreck but a cluster of debris with a higher yield of mods and salvage. this also would go hand in hand with risk v reward also all those player and t2 ships out in lowsec and 0.0 can produce better asteroid:wrecks
now we actually have something interesting to go look for and salvage, and mr. salvage industial nubbins has something to do with no combat skills needed (maybe tanking) I know this is a MMO but we all dont have someone to kill ships for us or want to run back and swap out our combat ship for a salvager 5 jumps away.
I could go on about ships salaging ships should be based on the mining barges and able to go out in lowsec and tank, because they have no offense etc or how the mining system is also kinda and why the only people mining are the big corps in deep 0.0 or the ones sitting in .5 with a indy and 2 alts in hulks. and mr. 5 mil sp cant just go out to lowsec and sneak mine without needing 2 ships and a hauler. help get industrialist types into lowsec. give us the tools to actually have a chance out there. i dont mind running from pirates and having to be cautious just like mr. 5 mil sp pirate does, but as it stands now its not viable and this is a big reason why lowsec is empty and empire is overcrowded.

Talon Draven, I hate alt-posts. But for you, I am making an exception and you can be my CEO any day. So beautifully explained and marvellously pointing out problems faced by the mining community.
Players like you will make this game better. You can have my vote for your proposal. :) --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

I'm not an alt, i took a break and got dumped in a noob corp :P
19.5 mil sp and i've done missions, mining, probing, and salvaging. but ty, i love the later 3 but it's just a shame how close it is to a great, interesting, intertwinded system it is but yet how tedious, sterile, and dull they actually are.

Sidetracking a bit, you can actually have about 20M SP in 15 months? --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

dunno if thats a good or bad shock :) but yeah i did take a few months off with no training, this is a 2nd character i restarted cause my 1.5 m sp first characters stats were borked. I have really high int and mem (probably too high now that i look back cause i trained all combat this time around) and did all the learnings first while i mined on that other char. But i also have an alt account that has barge 5 done by now i think, i still need to reactivate that account. This char can fly recons so i know about all the aspects i talked about and just wish i could explain why its soo close but so far off without making it sound like i'm rambling.

Not that hard if you do learning skills. ----- CONCORD Notice: Don't drink and fly. Drunken jumping can result in loss of ship through "navigational error".

So, nobody salvages except mission runners?
Thought I might actually get a little feedback here, but guess I'll have post in the features and ideas forum.

I'd say no to limiting salvagers to only a few ships, because it's un-EVE-y. After all, I can stick miners on my interceptor if I really wanted.
But I'd love to see some ships (maybe the T1 logistics cruisers, although not necessarily) get a salvager bonus on them. That'd be most good. ------

Don't see why not. An Achura Inventor training int/mem skills can get 2739 sp/hr (my alt is at 2706 now, and with a point of mem left to train) so 364 * 24 * 2739 = 23.92 million sp/year. The aforementioned alt is at 13.5M in a bit under 9 months, with less than ideal training schedule and a mix of skills. 20M in 15 months is going to be no problem.
On the downside your avatar gets to look like a farmer.
