Come on now. The people in this thread clearly know this. This is basic trading 101. Nothing I'd ever consider trading would be even remotely close to the refine value... if it was then the margins would be far too low most likely or the over-all profit far too low. It happens quite often on low-end items like drones and other T1 items... but those are barely worth trading usually. You can trade hundreds or even thousands of them and make less profit than a single decent item. But your little winky face makes it seem like you think you're telling us some amazing tidbit you learned. If someone doesn't know to recycle things that go below mineral value then they are at a very basic level still.
Originally by: Ambo Well yeah... but think about it for a minute. He was updating at least as fast as I was, usually within a few minutes of me overbidding, his would be up again. If he had just gone over me by a few isk (which is what he started to do at 4mil) then he would have been making a lot more money. All he has achieved is to massively decrease the profit we both make on that item.
My point is, if you are actually going to force someone out of the market then fine but why raise by large amounts like that again and again when the other person is clearly not going to drop out while there is money to be made?
If he leaves the market then I'll just lower my price again. I may have bought a few items at a high price but they are still profitable and frankly, 1 or 2 item lines maknig a bit less profit from 1 region is not going to cause me any sleepless nights.
In the end, this person achieved nothing but reduced profits for both of us. Personally, I don't give a damn if other people are making money or not. I'm not going to destroy any serious competitors with a few 10's of mil down the toilet so I'd rather just make as much money as I can.
You make the same false assumptions that many people do when complaining that someone "killed their market". You assume that because he is updating orders quickly one hour, or one day that he will do it every day all the time. He may have one day off work, so he wants the market now... and he is going to take it no matter what because he doesn't have time to modify orders the rest of the week. He could simply not want to have to waste his time modifying orders all the time... pricing you out of the market works better. He has no way to know you aren't leaving the market if he keeps raising the price... he probably assume you will. Send him an email telling him how he is killing your market and you won't leave!
Stop assuming people play the game just like you do. Everyone has different time constraints and values their time different. I personally would do exactly what that guy is doing if you outbid me constantly throughout the day. I'd destroy the market on the item. I'd destroy it to the point where it wasn't even worth trading... but I wouldn't withdraw my order... I'd leave it there to force you to keep your higher price. By leaving the market I meant not out-bidding you anymore, not removing my order. Obviously you'd just change your price back to the lower level.
If I wanted a market and couldn't get it I'd much rather the person who kept the market made less money than they were making. This is punishment for not letting me have their market.

You are wrong and you contradict yourself. These low-end items are worth trading, I already replied you on this point. Anything that makes 50% profit and up is worth trading.
You contradict yourself because you pretend knowing everything about recycling you already forgot that you can recycle them if they are not worth trading....

I do not contradict myself anywhere. Saying something is not worth trading doesn't mean its recycle value is below its value. It simply means it isn't worth my time to trade. Perhaps it is worth trading to you... but my standard is likely far higher. An item that yields 1-2 mil profit/day is not worth my time.
I have limited time to trade. If I'm going to spend my time updating orders, figuring out a market, etc then it had better be a damned good market. I don't want to be setting up tons of orders every day for tiny profits. I want a minimum of 1 mill is profit on every single order I set up. Sometimes that means trading millions of trit, other times it means a single item. But your little picture on the drones was not enough profit for me to spend my time dealing with. Sorry if you take offense... it's just isn't. If it's good enough for you then that's great... I already said the market needs people willing to deal with orders like that.
Something isn't worth trading just because it has a high percentage profit. I can make tons more isk per day on a 5% profit item than you're making on a 50% profit item.
I've trading an item with a 400% margin before for a month... but I stopped bothering. I was only making 300-500k isk/day on it. Not worth my time or effort.

I said you contradicted yourself because your reasoning doesn't take into account the mineral value. Do not consider the berserker, consider it is 66 isogen, 4 zydrines, 8 nocxium, 810 pyerite and 6439 tritanium. Now do the math at the price you would sell these minerals, say 86 iso, 2500 zyd, 200 nox, 7 pyerite, 2.50 trit, we get : 39043 isk. So 100 @ 24k you make 1M5 profit. But here what I did, I didn't bother, I click buy, I click asset and sell 35k, which is still above the price I buy the minerals, it would cost me 34k to produce, so it's quick profit for me. If you look at the screen I sold half of them in one
If I don't sell everything fast then I'll get them and reprocess to sell the minerals for extra benefit. I make, Brutix, Megathron and Dominix, this is where I make the real money but I like to see the market around well supplied since it attracts customer.

Oh my god these forums are ********. Keep deleteing my posts!
Anyway, back on topic:
I suppose different people just play different ways. It still makes no logical sense to me for a player to do what this player did but I guess both approaches are equally valid as we all seem to be pretty rich in here!

I do in fact completely understand what you're doing. There was no question as to what you were doing or what your picture showed. I've stated someone has to trade like that... it's just not worth it to me. Obviously you're selling them for 35k since you could refine for only 34k... and if you couldn't get 35 you'd refine them. Duh? I don't see where the disconnect is... this is obvious and I'd hope everyone does this.
I disregard mineral value because I assume it is an obvious factor that is considered. If something is worth more in minerals than it is to sell then you obviously refine it. Unless of course the items are worth such a puny amount that it isn't worth the time/effort to refine them and transport the minerals to where you need them. I build an assortment of T1 items as well, including battleships... I also build an assortment of T2 items. I trade in markets that are well established and I don't need to keep them stocked... I have people like you who do that for me, which is so very kind of you. I spend my time on the high profit stuff... and the low profit stuff I leave to others. If enough people leave the low profit stuff to others, the profits would rise so that someone would spend their time on it. Obviously the profits you make on those berserkers is high enough for you, which as I've said the entire time, is great for you and I. You're happy about your profit and I'm happy that you're doing something I don't wanna waste my time doing.

My rule of thumb: 0-5 jumps away do the 0.01isk to play nice 5-10 jumps away make it equal or significant because 0.01 won't be enough to attract sellers. ignore everything 11+ jumps away (unless it's a really good deal and you want to interact with it).

I think what we are running into is two things:
1) People who trade in different markets (i.e. both regionally and per item) have found methods that work. Both of which are described here.
2) Traders with less capital to work with tend to favor babysitting their orders and 0.01 isk bids, mostly out of necessity, whereas larger capital traders can make the types of orders where they grossly outbid the other traders and still make a decent profit.
Neither method is particularly wrong. Both are annoying to your fellow traders. Tired of the inane ramblings of the incompetent? Click here |

This is where Shadarle naivetT screams loud and proud. He claims that a part time player can 'price out of market' somebody who plays considerably more than them.
Well... what do you think that person is doing in game? Twiddling their thumbs? Or getting access to lower cost materiels?
Any active player is going to run RINGS around a goob who logs in once or twice a week or even a day.
Shadarle is trying to cover up his tactic of 'destroying' a market for an item as a planned tactic when in fact it is a great big giant dummy spit that he can't have the market so he won't let anyone else have it.
From an economic standpoint he is what is called an 'irrational trader' because he lets his emotions dictate his trading patterns.
Sure the tactic works in the short term. But over time... his limited time in game forces him to move on to other pastures and the market returns to normal.
****y traders like him are fun to watch meltdown.

Back when billionaires were very few (and mining barges and freighters didn't exist) I saw a big scordite price war in Tash Murkon, the price was so high (18 or 20isk? I don't remember) that only one buyer could follow. The volumes were also gigantic for the time, tenth of millions units. That was a wonder, a lot of people stopped their normal activities to go mine scordite around Tash Murkon. Now times have changed, nobody would play that game on minerals because mining barges and obelisks would come fill the orders.
Nowadays the mineral and mineral derived products markets are more fluid, there is no way you can destroy it. Shadarle is silly.

It all depends if you are pure trader, trader/freighter, trader/miner, trader/agent runner or trader/producer, it depends also on the location, the nearby regions and some other factors like security level, proximity of popular agents for missions, drone beacons,...

That is indeed true. I've worked in multiple different kinds of markets and each one takes a different strategy.
I always start out with small price changes in any market I'm in... this is just common sense. To get a feel for a market.
However, if someone refuses to let me get into a market by 23/7 updates of their order then I either have to let them have that market or I have to take it back by force. Force is a whole lot better than giving it up. I did this when I had 1 billion isk and I do it now that I have considerably more. I've not drastically changed any tactics I use as I've attained more money. I simply trade in more profitable markets and have left regions and items that are not worth my time.
My entire point has been that you need to do what works best for you. If you're a hard-core player on hours upon hours every day then the .01 updates every 5 minutes will work well for you. If you're someone who logs on an hour a day, that will not work. You don't have to give up because you play less... you can simply play differently and it works very well. Would I make more money if I had played 8+hours/day the entire last year? I'm sure I would have. Am I glad I didn't waste all that time on EVE and instead spent about 1 hour/day? Yes. I have done very well for myself. Heck, I recently found out that in one year of playing I have done better than even DS... so obviously my 1 hour/day has not limited me too much.
People need to stop assuming everyone else plays by the same rules they do. All these threads complaining about .01 would go away as would all the threads complaining about people not using .01.
Time spent playing and the individual markets you're in are the two key factors... wealth really doesn't matter too much imo, as long as you can afford to be in the markets you're in.

Shadarle, are you my long lost twin?
I love destroying profits for everyone who thinks the 0.01 ISK game is the pinnacle of EVE's market evolution. Mmmmh, 5% profit BEFORE taking taxes and fees into account? Yum.
Oh, and Taikun has no idea what he is talking about.

Nope, I'm far sexier than you so you couldn't be my twin
And who is Taikun? I don't see anyone by that name. Mwahahaha, DrSlurm's script is quite useful for filtering out garbage from this forum until CCP institutes a real ignore feature. I wonder how many posts he has followed me around in since I started using this script...

Hmmm... care to back up that statement? Otherwise it is just an opinion and you know what they say about those.
Opinions are like $@#holes. Everyones got one and they usually stink.

P.S. Shardales attitute towards the 0.01 isk game is childish to the extreme and exactly how I described it.
Originally by: Shadarle I refuse to let anyone else have my market without paying for it with horrible margins, period. I'd rather no one have a market if I can't have it.
This tactic will only work so long as he continues to spend his 'hour a day' destorying it. It is a time game. Sooner or later he will have to move his 'market destorying rump' to some other endevour or continue to make zero money with his 'hour a day'.
He is nothing but hot air and ****y bravado about destorying markets. In the long term... he amounts to a price blip and everyone would have forgotten he was there by next Tuesday.

As posted in the other thread where this argument is occuring, I am posting this here. I feel that the market can be turned more fair, as requested by several individuals in this thread. To do this, I propose not limiting the current system, but adding a new system on top of that for those who desire fair business practice in a market designed around freedom but not fairness. Without further ado:
This offer is 100% serious. I will gladly work out a deal with anyone tired of the .01 isk wars. I will take current market value as determined by me for whatever item you desire and sell these to you at that price + taxes and fees. I will not reduce this price as the price is reduced by .01 bidders. I will increase this price if the price rises by whole percentage values of total cost, in order that overhead does not exceed profitability and I can remain in business.
This is exactly what you are asking for when you request the ability to willingly pay more instead of buy from .01 bidders. I am offering you exactly what you want. I have yet to receive an EVE-mail regarding this offer.
