Edited by: Miko Kiyan on 10/02/2004 01:36:47 Edited by: Miko Kiyan on 10/02/2004 01:36:31 It would basically be the skill at cramming as much as possible into your cargo hold (making the most efficient use of available space). Think trying to fit everything you want to bring in your car when taking a road trip or packing a suitcase.
Would give +2% to cargo capacity per level.
*shrug* Even if they made it a rank 8 skill with super-high required skills, people would still train it because everyone wants to be able to haul more with their indies (or even just carry away more loot with other ships).

this is actually a good idea.
professional packers (IRL) are able to do things really well - while some idiots couldn't pack a bag to save their life. ;)
two thumbs up! -----

I like the idea, but would also like to see NEW haulers come on to the market.
Haulers should be BIG, with huge capacity so you can at least haul a few frigates and cruisers around (perhaps fit 10 frigates or 2 cruisers when packaged).
Anyone who manufactures ships or has tried to haul around large qty's of mins (trit) knows what i mean!!! Its hard to get products like that to market or the mins to a place where u want to build em and sell em.
By adding more HIGHER LEVEL skills, players maybe able to take up hauling as a CAREER. (Like real life road haulers who have to train for bigger rigs)
So u could have to train: Indy skill to level 5 -> Giant Indy skill level 5 -> Titan Indy skill level 5.
(Titan Indys 500,000m3 ū I wish :)
Plus have your "Expert packer / Optimised packing" skill which gives 2% extra space per level, which u can train at any point.
ItĘs too easy in this game to become good at almost everything.

Sounds lika a really good idea. We need more skills that are directed at professions. Also, there should be a revision of the sizes ships take in cargo. I mean a small escapepod takes 1000 m3 while it's only 5 m long or something. And when repackaged they should take even less space. Would also be cool if you could package a ship into several pieces. For example: You want to transport a large cruiser. You repackage it to to be able to fit into a cargohold but it's divided into small parts. Like 10 diffrent packages so that you can transfer a few at a time. When you want to assemble it you need to have all the original pieces at the station where you want to assemble it. As been said we need more and more speciallised ships for hauling. A bestower may be good for hauling ore in short range (like in the same solarsystem) but for longer trips you want something diffrent. Imagine a battleshipclass hauler that has heavy armor/shielding and has good resistance to EW but with almost no weapons except for defensive weapons. These would be better for longer trips with limited escort and also operations in belts with heavy spawns. Anyhow, speciallity is a good thing

aye all well and good like the sound of it... But wouldn't it just mean that the lower (smaller) Haulers would be substituted for bigger ones when people have mastered them? need them to be really slow and unwieldy if they should keep the small haulers ingame...

Yep - another "agree" here.
In real life, aircraft cargo is put on board by a "loadmaster" - an individual specifically trained in loading cargo in the most efficient way - which not only maximises on cargo space, but also puts heaviest items nearest the ships centre of mass to stop it becoming unbalanced, and hence keeping the agility up as well.
So perhaps a loadmaster skill could have a secondary benefit to ship agility as well?!!
Easy now,

There is a way to keep the small indies ingame. Remember that the normal indies has a problem navigating in roid belt because of the rocks. If you say that the big indies cant warp to a belt because of danger from the rocks, then you can only use the small indies to haul to the station where the big ones will move it away to another place to sell or fabricate. As for the part to splitt ships into parts, this could make a new thing to fabricate, ships parts that you need to build a ship, not only the original parts. Think about it, things such as caldari haul parts or gallente engines.

Well I think repackaged ships should be much smaller than they are atm. But 10 frigates and 2 cruisers would still be too much (This looks more like a Carrier Class ship). I'd agree if u put that number down to 5 frigates OR 1 cruiser :)
