Edited by: Qintaan on 10/02/2004 16:40:38 Trying to figure out which to buy as my first cruiser.
I keep seeing people writing that you can't put turrets on the caracal, yet in-game fittings info on the ship says it has 5 launcher hardpoints and 2 turret hardpoints, with 5 hi-slots (in comparison to the kestrel, which lists 0 turret hardpoints). Also it has a 200 capacity drone bay while the BB has 0, and it has 145 more cargo capacity. I don't use electronic warfare and even if I wanted to I don't have the skills, and I'm not getting them soon...
If you can put 2 turrets on the caracal, and it looks like you can, then I don't see why I wouldn't get this over the BB...
Any thoughts?

I hate to say this, but you shouldn't get either as your first cruiser. they are both very expensive ships to operate, and mainly only good for pvp.
I am assuming that you make your money by NPC hunting or running missions. While the caracal is a good mission runner (big cargohold), I would recommend an osprey as your first cruiser. Upgrade to a moa when feasible. Osprey works as an incredible all-purpose ship for very cheap.
just my thoughts, but if you are set on a caracal or blackbird, get the blackbird first. it is more versatile because of its 3 turret HPs and six midslots.

bb is much faster and agile, caracal is a really slow ship and i think it has problems with the cpu
when you want to do pvp buy a caracal, but you cant earn much money with it Wanna fly with me?

Here my 2 isk:
- the BB is a dedicated EW ship so use it for that. If not, other Cruisers are better suited imo. - the Caracal looks awesome - you can pack a deadly punch in a Caracal, especially when fitted full of missiles - if you do NPC hunting, missiles are very expensive and will effectively reduce your win margin to near zero
Now, I'd definitely take the Caracal over the BB, if I didn't want the BB for EW specifically. Then I'd go for rails and the largest possible launchers, a shield booster and cap relays. Maybe a dmg mod for the guns.
But don't forget that the main intend of a Caracal are its missiles and using it with guns is a bit of an antithesis to it.

Edited by: Qintaan on 10/02/2004 17:09:48 I guess maybe I don't understand the missle arguement. I haven't played anything past frigates yet.
The lowest example you can give is taking on a 2k rat. You can kill a 2k rat with 1 400isk heavy missle and make 1600isk per kill. Does this ratio of cost to profit go down in the higher end of the game? I guess if that is the case I should not get the caracal...

One good thing about the BB aside from EW is the 6 mid slots. You can shield tank this baby out and stay alive fairly well.
Plus it has 4 hi's, you can use 3 launchers or 3 turrets and a launcher. I would recommend the BB over the osprey just because of the mid slots, it makes the ship very versitile.

Edited by: Shamis Orzoz on 10/02/2004 20:25:44 Both the blackbird and Caracal are my favorite PvP cruisers. The good caracal pilot can deal out as much damage as a mediocre scorpian pilot. The blackbird is the ultimate EW ship. Cheap and very effective.
I don't know why somebody said these ships are expensive. Both of them are much cheaper than the top end cruisers like the rupture, thorax, maller and moa.
But neither of these ships will do you any good as your first cruiser unless you join a PvP corp. If you are in a mining corp, or hope to hunt npc's by yourself, you are much better off saving up for a moa. A blackbird or Caracal fitted with cruise missles can easily take out the hardest empire space NPC spawns. But if you are using all those cruise missles you cut deeply into your npc killing profits. So your best bet is to get a moa and rely mostly on turrets and only use the missles when you get into trouble. Unless you are going after 500k - 1 million bounty npc's, using cruise missles or torps on npc's is just not practical.
But if you are set on a bb, or caracal, join a PvP corp. Learn some EW and have fun killing.
