My question is if I could ... for a time at least ... just do agent missions and some mining from time to time .... I know that it's possible (DUH!) but is it profitable ... or is mining way more profitable than missions ?

At level 1 mining is more profitable. At level 2 missioning becomes more profitable provided you salvage. From level 3 on missioning is by far the most profitable high sec activity in the game, perhaps in the grand scale only topped by nullsec ratting as solo revenue source.

Yes, you can make a living by doing what you say, but it depends on what kind of "living" you want, if you pvp or not etc, and if you're planning on becoming a billionaire ;)
Mining is, from my point of view, a very bad idea if you don't fly a barge or exhumer, even if there are some other ship setups that in some cases would be comparable to a crappy barge.
Also, I question if mining in Empire is more profitable than running more higher level missions. Once you start running level 3 or 4 missions, they'd probably give you at least, if not more, ISK than Empire mining. I'm however no mission runner and wouldn't really know. What I do know is that mining in Empire isn't _way more_ profitable. If you're talking about mining the golden stuff in 0.0 then it is more profitable, but my guess is you won't smell that in a while..
Hope that answered your questions. Send me an eveMail if you ever need help with anything ;) ______________________________________________

No idea about mining but mission running can give you a very comfortable living
Think 25 plus mill per hour on lvl 4 hi sec missions. thats not 25 mill for every hour your logged on but for the time spent on the mission shooting salvaging and looting. Of course its possible to far exceed this if flying a CNR and blitzing missions in 30 minutes. but a nice steady pace in a reliable old warhorse like a Domi will bring in the above mentioned sum.
you also end up with a lot of salvage that you can sell or make into rigs with very few skills, thats big bucks, 50 mill for some T1 rigs. The piles of loot you can melt and make your own ammo and sell as well.
Some of the loot is worth 12 mill for 1 item if your lucky, Arbelest missile launchers for example.
And this is hi sec remember, double it if you are doing 0.0 missions and a bit of belt ratting.
Short answer = yes missions can be very profitable.

At present there is a fairly deleicate balance between ISK and mineral inflow, meaningthat just like you need a high level mission to bring in lots of ISK, only a high end miner with a hulk will be able to compete with the income of high level missions. At present (mostly due to a mineral influx that happened around the release of Rev 1) the balance is slightly tipped in favor of missioning, but if enough people focus on the agent rewards that should change as this introduces more ISK into the economy, makingprices inflate, making items more valuable, making the ore those items are made of more valuable. Then more people will mine, making the prices drop until more people mission and so on.
In the end, both mining and missioning are essential cornerstones of the resource model of EVE. Without either there would be no POSes, ships or other toys for the blobbers to play with.

Missions, particularly level 4, can make you a nice living.
In the first 8 months of playing, I made an estimated 1.5 billion - 0.5 from mining and 1 from level 1 through 3 missions.
In the 6 months since I started running level 4 missions, I have made 2 if not 3 times that amount.
Now that I have a POS available, manufacturing, research and invention should add to this, and I am now running a few complexes as well.
It is possible to make that kind of money from mining, but it is risky - the good stuff is in low/no sec - and the skills required are pretty high. Combine that with the fact that you need other people to help - hauling, guarding etc - whereas missions (up to level 4, anyway) can be done solo, and the endless tedium of mining - I have done more than my fair share of 5 hour mining operations.

Mission running is a fine source of income. The catch is, its boring as hell - its the age old question of "would I rather do something that sucks for a lot of money" versus "can I do stuff I like for moderate income".

Mission running does certainly get boring eventually - once you reach the point at which you can basically solo AFK all of them. However, this takes a while, unlike mining which is boring before you even start ;-)
There are also level 5 missions, complexes and COSMOSes, as well as exploration to add a little challenge/variety - obviously, some of these provide mining opportunities, but with a bit of risk.
Also, mining is a bit of a dead-end career path - after you've spent a year learning every imaginable mining skill, the only thing you can use those skills for is more mining. Missions at least teach you the basics of combat and ship fitting (albeit PvE rather than PvP), and open the door to other paths, such as being ransomed, or having your ship blown up ;-)

It will always be the same level as the agent you get the mission from.

lol. It's only funny because it is true. Thought about mission mining last night and then decided that spending the time reprocessing would be more "fun".
I have mined semi-afk with a book (glancing up once a minute to move to a jetcan) or while an alt is doing a mission to keep myself from using my keyboard as a pillow.
Mining can payoff in ISK, but asteroids are very dull (unless you try mining the ones in The Blockade for example ). ____________ Guides I like: Mining Guide V2.0.1 By Halada (Awesome guide!) |

I have done this in the past. The group would chat about various things. Hours would pass. We would chat about asteroids. More hours would pass. We would stop chatting. Yet more hours would pass. A lone belt rat would appear. Frantic activity while everyone rushed to be the first to get it. Back to the asteroids. Back to sleep. Zzzzzzzz ;-)

you definately need more booze and more things to talk about . singing also helps , compose stories (personally this char is a mord sith , based on several characters from laws of magic books , red leather battle suit and trained to torture )(some whipping around always startsup the chat again for example)
or modernising the keelhauling system for disobedient crewmembers ( trash eject system combined with bunjeecord and other varieties can fill a few nights) (use different voices , i even monologued between 2 chars i have , in dispute , fe miner and hauler )

Agree. I find solo mining incredibly dull. A good mining op with a group is fun, mostly due to the social aspect. Of course, the same can be said of mission running, its probably more fun with a mate or two along.
