Ok, I know I'm being silly. As the subject implies, I have this itch to own a carrier. It isn't rational. It isn't about power gaming or maximizing return on skill points or ISK. It's because I think it would be fun to me. So, assuming I go and be foolish and buy a carrier....
1)How much support will I need? Of course the carrier will need someone to help it jump around, but how much else? I've come across references on the forums that capital ships are occasionally (often?) hunted in low-sec since they make a tempting target.
2) The carrier's primary role of course is PVP fleet engagements. Is there anything else that one could do with it? I'm imagining it would be pretty much overkill for ratting and can't be used for mission running.
Thanks for any information and suggestions. And to all of those who will say I shouldn't get one because they are limited and I'm obviously ignorant, I say... yes, I know. :p

Well, you better had start training a Cyno alt to support that carrier, perhaps 1-2 of them, 1 at least, otherwise moving that Carrier around is going to be a nightmare. Relying on other corp/alliance members to light a landing field for you is not in their best interests isk wise.
Carriers can be used for other things as well, and they frequently are, those being:
- POS fuelling, more to large/medium POS's as you can land inside a pos, fuel and warp back to a station - Hauling between 0.0 and lowsec (OMG how many times I beg someone to haul something for me, either shipwise, skillbooks, essential mods etc, and it works ((fuel + cyno on a shared load roughly 9-12mil cost per jump))
Ratting is a no-no in a Carrier, thats perfect ground for it being ganked and lost, and mining... seriously?
Shopping List: 1 x CYNO ALT TONS OF FUEL Extra fighters for engagements (When they go POP!) Right clicking all alliance members and hitting ignore!!

I kinda have the same urge, would like a cap ship but the hassle of cyno alts puts me off :( I am allready funding this account with isk and I can not be arsed to grind more rnd standings and farm yet more cores just to keep a cyno account going :(
*sigh* No cap ship for me.

IMO, Carriers are a great tool for logistics support. That means a lot of trips back and forth getting your m8's things in low sec and for POS refuels.
Any engagement yo get involved in you should be able to rep your friends and keep them well stocked.
Also, you need to have your jump skills as high as possible to keep your fuel costs down and you're jump distances up.
As for support you should have a tackler since you're targeting will be slow and the fighters can't hit small ships very well. Keep that in mind if you're thinking about taking on someone in a small sig ship. You will need a cyno alt or someone farily reliable to cyno you in and be prepared to defend them as soon as you jump in as pirates love the easily warpable icon
There are supposedly some mishes designed for capitals but I haven't taken part in them so I can't comment on it.
OH BTW..its not silly to want a carrier. Just be able to pay for it and expect to loose one every now and then

They are great haulers and they can do most lvl 5 missions. Probably not reason enough for a solo pilot to get one and live with the hassle, but... there are uses for it.

carrier=alliance vessel/lowsec pirate vessel
if you are not in a decent sized pirate corp or a large 0.0 alliance, don't bother getting one.
