Not too strange. I did the exact same thing to a fellow one time. I wasn't pirating but rather killing NPCs and he came along and took some of my cans so I killed him.
Upon looking in the can and seeing basic mods on a moa I felt sorry for the guy and gave him his gear back.
Nice story, guy sounds pretty cool.

I guess it's just my expectation that people out pirating are after loot. I'm still not sure what this guy was looking for. The way I see it, he lost some cash from the ammo (if any) that he expended and the convo to my corp mate.
I'm still perplexed.

eh, no point in whiping out newbs. i blow everything 'cause ya never know, but if it's crap loot and the guy is nice i see no reason to steal/blow his can

It's more than a day later and I still can't figure out why the guy even bothered attacking Shadis in the first place. He got no loot, no joy from shooting a pod, and no isk. I'm just wondering what the deal is...
Don't get me wrong, I hate it when my m8s get podded and get their ships destroyed, but I fail to see what the guy got from this encounter.
