I thin an interesting idea to implement beyond the eschro/broker fee/ faction station service fee is an empire space poll/income tax implemented in 2 tiers.
Tier 1: Poll tax, 1-15% tax on income across the board on all NPC Corp empire space carebears, but inreturn once a month you get your income tax returns, if you want to make it really complicated open up an accounting mini profession.
Tier 2: Income tax modified by relative incomes, richer player pay a % more then newbies, but consequently get a nice big fat check once in a while.
Tier 3: Polling tax at jumpgates, based on the size of your ship and the relative worth of your cargo, here is where smuggling skills can come into play and some actually ccp supported scam skills so that you can scam concord and cheat on your taxes.
Here's what it accomplishes:
1) A new money sink is implemented into the game helping to control inflation.
2) Carebears who make a large amount of money with only taking a minor risk in doing so now not only have a sufficient money sink but now are "paying" taxes to the Empire factions for CONCORD protecting their ass.
3) Bottleneck places like Jita will now discourage people from going to it as traveling to Jita in a frieghter with hundreds of millions of isk in goods will instead travel to a more local nexus, thus decentralizing the trade hubs and having more local ones. Jita and such are stil trade hubs but now they'll be less laggy if all is well.
Additional Thoughts-
An option to not pay taxes I think should be in, possibly in a 3 strike system with a security hit (minor one) each time and the 3rd strike resulting in CONCORD not protecting you until you next pay your taxes.
Taxes should increase/decrease depending on the relative tensions of the factions, an arms race between Caldari & Gellente should result in a noticible spike over time and decreases wen tensions cool off, indirectly affected by mission runner performance, with an active "war" between Gellente and Caldari resulting in say a 10-25% spike with say a discount if your willing to sign up as a Navy pilot for the duration of the NPC "war" and partake in PvP dynamic missions and being perfectly legal ingame to blow up people of the opposing blood line registered with the opposing faction.
Maybe make it s that you make a decent amount of money via a "salary" while the war is on.
Thoughts and Anectdotes?

There's things you could/should try to make "more realistic", there's others you don't. This is one of the latter. The only purpose it actually serves is to annoy and restrict. It adds nothing positive to gameplay, nothing "factional warfare" isn't supposed to, anyway.
So, THUMBS DOWN. Both of them. _

Oh boy.
How do you classify income? Will my expenses be deductible? Can I apply for bankruptcy protection if I'm flying my last Ibis?
The only thing I can see working in EVE is VAT (Value Added Tax), because it can be automated and only penalizes people with large profit margins.
It would be interesting to see a new mini profession (chartered accountant or CPA) but I'm sure as hell not going to log on to continue doing the same stuff that I do in the office, pew pew FTW, working in-game FTL

Just set tax rates on NPC corps to 10%. Thus, if they want to NPC without paying tax, they form their own corps with zero tax, but leaves them open to war declarations.

actually a good idea, maybe a tweak so that only players that are X amount of months old pay the tax, or your moved at said age to a different NPC corp so that your first one is more a orientation to the game where everythings nice and easy

Do you ever stop being a hard core conservative? seriously change is good, change brings progress it brings evolutions, adaption. Doesnt matter if some dieas have flaws the point is to get them out there, bounced around, developed and maybe somoene high up there will take notice and implement it, thats my contribution for making the game better.

If you paid attention you would notice I love change, I am just VERY allergic to detrimental ones. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve-Forums:

Enh, something variable between 5% and 10%, but a good basic idea. Want the protection of an NPC corp? Pay for it. Want to exempt yourself from taxes? Form your own corp.
